MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Cory Johnson (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) and Kevin Williamson (Jr., Britton, S.D.) each rushed for two touchdowns, and Brian Schumacher (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) scored a touchdown and accounted for 272 yards of offense, as Concordia College-Moorhead dominated in a 48-14 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Schumacher completed 11-of-17 passes for 180 yards and had 12 rushes for 92 yards and a four-yard score early in the contest, as the Cobbers, ranked No. 13 in the latest D3football.com Division III national rankings, improve to 7-1 overall, 6-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg is now 1-7 overall, 1-5 in MIAC play.
Concordia poured out 576 yards of total offense -- 372 rushing yards and 204 passing yards -- while limiting Augsburg to just 217 yards of total offense, including just 34 net yards of rushing. Concordia dominated possession, with 38:53 time of possession on 84 plays, while Augsburg had just 49 offensive plays for 21:07 time of posssession. Concordia scored the first 28 points of the contest and led 41-14 at halftime, scoring touchdowns on its first six drives of the game.
A six-play, 45-yard drive was capped by a 4-yard run by Schumacher just 4:18 into the game. On the next drive, Ben Aakre (Sr., Underwood, Minn.) intercepted a pass and rushed 34 yards to the Augsburg 5-yard line, and Johnson scored on a 5-yard rush on the next play. A nine-play, 75-yard drive ended on a 4-yard touchdown run by Ben Thoreson (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.), and the first quarter was capped on a seven-play, 85 yard drive and a 13-yard scoring run by Johnson, giving the Cobbers a 28-0 first-quarter lead.
Augsburg wide receiver Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored both times he caught the football on offense in the second quarter, hauling in a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Lange (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) early in the quarter to cap a 13-play, 83-yard drive, and scoring on a 71-yard reception from Lange with 5:55 left in the frame. Lange, who made his first collegiate start at quarterback for the Auggies, completed 14-of-30 passes for 173 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Williamson scored for Concordia on a 4-yard run with 6:26 in the second quarter, as Concordia capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive, and the Cobbers took a 41-14 lead into halftime on a 10-yard pass from Schumacher to Eric Rodel (Jr., Bird Island, Minn./BOLD HS). Concordia's final score came midway through the third quarter, as a 10-play, 70-yard drive was completed on a two-yard run by Williamson.
Twelve different Cobbers rushed the football and eight Cobbers caught passes in the game. In addition to Schumacher's 92 rushing yards, Johnson rushed six times for 80 yards and Jesse Nelson (Fr., Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka HS) rushed nine times for 34 yards. Rodel caught six passes for 77 yards, and Tyler Anderson (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) caught two passes for 50 yards.
For Augsburg, Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) caught seven passes for 64 yards, and Schreier had two receptions for 77 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg linebacker Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) matched a season high set earlier this year with 22 tackles (six solo) and a half-sack. Jordan Hastings (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 14 tackles (six solo) and an interception, and Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) had 13 tackles (three solo) and a half-sack. Andy Matzke (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles (four solo) and Ross Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had eight tackles (one solo).
Three Concordia defenders had five tackles each -- Matt Kleber (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.), Mark Halley (Sr., Mentor, Minn./Fertile-Beltrami HS) and Dave Moll (Jr., Battle Lake, Minn.). Aakre and Eric Svobodny (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) had interceptions for the Cobbers.
Concordia hosts St. Olaf in an MIAC game next Saturday (11/5) at 1 p.m. at Jake Christiansen Stadium in Moorhead, Minn.
