Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/10/08)-- A huge part of college soccer comes in the area of free kicks. Teams spend hours on the training field practicing taking free kicks and also how to defend the scoring chance opportunities. After Wednesday against Augsburg, Concordia is going to have to go back to the practice field and work on stopping other teams from scoring on free kick chances. The Cobbers conceded three dead ball goals and lost 3-0 to the Auggies in Moorhead on Wednesday in the conference opener for both teams.

The loss snaps Concordia's three-game winning streak and drops their overall record to 3-2-0. Augsburg is now 2-1-1 on the season.

Concordia showed their improved style of play throughout the game but had a hard time defending the Auggies quick attack and play from the wings. The Cobbers stayed even with Augsburg until the 29th minute when Ryan Sorensen scored his first goal of the year. Sorensen was in the right spot at the right time as he knocked home a rebound after a pair of Auggies headed the ball on net from a corner kick. CC goalie Mads Schmidt made the initial save on Nick Anderson's header but the ball went right to Sorensen who pounded home the rebound.

The second goal was more of the same as Schmidt had a hard time collecting an initial shot off of a free kick from outside the box. The ball then caromed to D.J. Wendell who slotted the ball home at 39:38 for his team-leading fourth goal of the year.

The scored stayed at 2-0 in favor of the Auggies until the 55th minute when Peter Loyd scored his first collegiate goal from inside the six-yard box after the ball ricocheted around the Cobber goalmouth after another Augsburg corner kick.

After going the entire first half without a shot on net, CC was able to get a shot on frame in the second period but was outshot for the game 7-1 in shots on net and 11-4 overall.

Schmidt made four saves for Concordia while Augsburg goalie Pascaul Venter made the one save to earn the shutout.

The Cobbers will stay at home and host Gustavus on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
