Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/04/08)-- After 45 minutes of play in the Cobbers' game against St. Thomas on Saturday it looked as if Concordia had finally learned key conference lessons and was ready to post a quality win against a top MIAC opponent. Unfortunately a bad break and tough bounce cost CC the chance to win for the fifth time this season as they lost 2-1 to the Tommies in Moorhead.

Concordia (4-7-0/1-5-0 MIAC) set the tone in the first half from the opening kick. The Cobbers stepped up their intensity and took advantage of a laid back St. Thomas (9-3-1/4-1-1 MIAC) in the opening minutes of play. The Cobbers were rewarded for their improved play in the 15th minute when Marco Riboli curled home a free kick from just outside the penalty area. The goal was set up by freshman forward Riley McGlynn who drew a foul just outside the left side of UST penalty area. Riboli stepped up and curled a shot past the Tommie wall and into the near side of the goal at 14:25. For Riboli it was his second goal of the season.

The Tommies picked up their play in the second part of the opening half and almost went level in the 37th minute when a rebound shot found the back of the net. However, UST was ruled to have knocked the ball out of Cobber goalie Mads Schmidt's hands and the goal was disallowed.

The second turned unfortunate for Concordia in less than four minutes. That is when St. Thomas forward Mike Hutton converted a penalty kick at 48:49. Hutton was awarded the penalty kick after Elliot Amundson broke towards the CC net and into the penalty area in the middle of the field. A Cobber defender was able to get an angle on Amundson and knock the ball away and in the process both players tumbled to the ground. The center official who was trailing immediately behind the play did not make a call but the alternate official who was on the sideline 25 yards away from the play signaled for a penalty kick and the free kick was awarded to the Tommies.

The game went back and forth from that point with St. Thomas holding possession and Concordia trying to come up with a quick counter. The Tommies were able to grab the game-winning goal less than 15 minutes from the end of regulation. Junior Derek Engler broke free of the CC defense and went in on Schmidt. His initial shot was handled by the CC goalie bu the rebound came right back into the on-rushing Engler and he banged home the rebound. The goal at 75:08 was his third of the season.

Concordia had a couple of opportunities on dead balls late in the game but was never able to come up with the quality chance to gain the equalizer.

For the game, St. Thomas had a 17-9 advantage in total shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Schmidt came away with six saves for CC, while UST goalie Carlos Castelan stopped two shots to earn the win.

The Cobbers will return to conference action when they play at Macalester on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.
