St. Paul, Minn.-- Hopefully for the Concordia men's soccer team the old adage is correct and bad things only come in three's.
The Cobbers lost 5-0 to Macalester on Tuesday in St. Paul and completed its hat trick of 5-0 losses. Last week Concordia dropped games by similar scores to St. Thomas and Gustavus.
Concordia is now 0-3-0 in the MIAC and 1-4-0 overall. The Scots improve to 1-0-0 in conference play and 5-1-0 overall.
The Cobbers allowed three goals in the first half and two in the final period as Macaletser won its conference opener. The Scots used a balanced attack to claim the victory. Five different Macalester players scored and nine players found their way onto the scoresheet.
The Scots opened the scoring at the 11:22 mark when Joe Wertz one-timed a shot over Cobber goalie Dustin Pattengale.
Adric Mueller and Kevin Kretschmer finished off the scoring in the opening period.
Concordia was able to apply offensive pressure on the Scots defense and came away with four shots in the half.
Macalester tacked on two more goals in the final 45 minutes. Michael Melamed and Grant Stegner added goals 6:12 apart and pushed the final total to 5-0.
For the game, Macalester outshot Concordia 20-6 and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Pattengale went the whole way in the net for the Cobbers and finished with six saves. Macalester goalie Ryan Palmer made four saves to pick up the shutout.
Concordia will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host St. Olaf at 11:00am at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
