MOORHEAD, Minn.-- In a game that was a tale of two halvess, Concordia fell five minutes short in their bid to pick up the first conference win of the season. The Cobbers erased a 2-0 half time deficit 24 minutes into the second period only to watch St. Mary's score the game-winning goal with five minutes to play.
The Cardinals tacked on a fourth goal 1:08 later to push the final score to 4-2. The Cobbers remain winless in their last six games and fall to 1-7-0 on the season. St. Mary's wins for only the second time in their past eight games. The Cardinals improve to 2-3-0 in the conference and 2-6-1 overall.
The second half was a completely different game for the Cobbers as they started to find space on the wing and were able to sustain a prolonged offensive attack. Concordia outshot the Cardinals 11-6 and tied the game on goals by Matt Klein and Sylvester Ndhlovu. Klein's goal came off of a cross when he neatly headed the ball into the back of the net. For Klein it was his first goal of the year. Ndhlovu tied the game at 68:50 when he finished off a pass from Klein. It was Ndhlovu's team-leading fourth tally of the year.
It appeared that Concordia might get a go-ahead goal minutes later but St. Mary's was able to hold the Cobbers off the board.
The game-deciding play came exactly at the 85:00 mark when Schmitt scored his second goal of the game. Schmitt completed his hat trick 1:08 later.
The Cobbers outshot St. Mary's 14-11 for the game. Cobber keeper Brett Oestreich made five saves, while Cardinal goalie Ryan O'Connor stopped three shots to pick up his second win of the year.
Concordia will play at non-conference Northwestern on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4:00pm.
