Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/15/07)-- Concordia entered its game against Gustavus on a three-game winless streak and winless at home in 2007. Both those streaks ended on Saturday as the Cobbers broke out their offensive arsenal and downed the Gusties 4-2. The win is the first of the year inside conference play for CC and improves their overall record to 3-2-1. They are now 1-0-1 in the MIAC. Gustavus, who sees their winless streak against Concordia reach five, remains winless in the MIAC at 0-2-0 and evens their overall mark at 3-3-0.

As much as each team tried to impose their style of play on the opposition, the wind had the most effect on the outcome. Playing in conditions with gusts up to 23 mph, the teams watched as balls played in the air were routinely misjudged. The Cobbers were able to take a 2-0 lead in the first half going with the wind. CC took the initial lead in the contest at 22:00 when Maia Johnson netted her second goal of the season. Seven minutes later Concordia added a second goal as Megan Rice recorded her first goal of the year.

CC did not allow a goal in the opening period and extended their shutout streak in the first half of games this season. The Cobbers have not allowed a goal in the first half in their first six games of the season. They currently have a streak of 332:29 without giving up a goal in the first half of play - a streak that dates all the way back to the MIAC playoff title game last season.

Leading 2-0 and holding a 12-1 edge in shots at the break, CC saw the game widen even farther 20 minutes into the second period when freshman Susan Obermiller took a pass from Sam Johnson and put the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Obermiller's team-leading fourth of the year.

Gustavus would pull to within two goals at the 65:40 mark when Amy Kunkel scored her second goal of the year.

Rachel Lewis would reestablish the Cobbers' three-goal margin when she slotted the ball under Gustie keeper Ashley Ohlson at 74:56. For Lewis, it was her second goal of 2007.

It took less than three minutes for Gustavus to respond with their second goal of the game. Becca Hagen pushed the final score to 4-2 with her third goal of the season.

Concordia held a 19-5 edge in shots for the game and a 15-4 margin in shots on goal. The Gusties had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

CC head coach Dan Weiler split the goalkeeping duties. Junior Britt Reiersgord played the first 45 minutes and made one save. Senior Ashley Liegakos came on for the second half and made one save as well.

Ohlson made 11 saves in goal for Gustavus.

Concordia will have a full week off before returning to play against Carleton on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2:30 p.m.
