Gameday Game Recap

ST. PETER , Minn. (9/13/08)-- The good news for the Cobber women's soccer team is that they are still undefeated. The bad news is that they had to endure another two-overtime tie to a conference opponent. For the second straight game to open MIAC play, the Cobbers could not find a game-winner and settled for a 1-1 double overtime tie at Gustavus on Saturday.

On Wednesday Concordia wasn't able to score a goal in 110 minutes and tied Augsburg 0-0. It looked as if the Cobbers would be doomed to go another whole game without scoring. For 82 minutes, CC suffered through another round of missed chances and "almost offensive combinations. To make matters worse, Concordia had conceded a goal in the 65th minute when Gustavus forward Chelsea Craven received a long ball from the Gustie defense and outran the CC defenders to race in on goal on a breakaway. Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord was able to block the initial shot but then Craven put home the rebound to give GAC a 1-0 lead at 64:35.

Concordia was unable to respond until freshman defender Kelsey Swagger took matters into her own hands and raced the ball down the wing. She slipped past the Gustie forwards and then ran past the GAC midfield line. Swagger then turned the corner on the Gustavus wing defender who rolled over to cover Swagger's knifing run. Swagger turned the corner by the GAC endline, looked up into the middle of the goal area and spotted a wide open Maia Johnson. Johnson calmly slid the ball into the far corner of the net to tie the score at 1-1 at the 82:36 mark. For Johnson it was her first goal of the season.

The two teams then played the seven-plus minutes without settling the tie. They then went to overtime and played an additional 20 minutes without putting the ball in the net. The Cobbers did have the better of the chances in the extra periods as they outshot Gustavus 4-3 in overtime.

For the game, Concordia outshot Gustavus 17-9 in overall shots and 7-3 in shots on goal. Reiersgord made two saves in the game while Gustie goalie Ashley Ohlson stopped six shots.

The Cobbers will head outside the conference to take on regional foe St. Scholastica on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
