Gameday Game Recap

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (10/25/08)-- Fate might have finally arrived on the side of the Concordia women's soccer team on Saturday. After struggling with tough breaks and injuries in the last couple of weeks, the Cobbers received one of the most fortunate bounces in recent history in the final two minutes of their game with Bethel and came away with a 2-1 in Arden Hills on Saturday. With the win, Concordia keeps their playoff hopes alive as they have one more game remaining in the conference regular season. CC is now 6-2-2 in league play and 11-3-3 overall.

With less than two minutes two go in regulation sophomore defender Mikenna Maroney stepped up and delivered a shot that could propel CC into their sixth straight conference tournament. Maroney unleashed a 40-yard shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down towards the goal line. However, the ball came down and hit the Bethel goalie in the back of the head and then deflected into the goal. The score at 88:54 gave CC the 2-1 win. For Maroney it was her first collegiate goal. Abby Habein passed the ball to Maroney and had a hand in both CC goals.

The game was deadlocked at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes despite Concordia having several chances and outshooting Bethel 8-3. The game took a turn for the worse for the Cobbers in the 58th minute when Esther Sowles knocked home the game's first goal after a scramble in front o f the CC goal.

Concordia tied the game less than six minutes later when Habein scored her third goal of the season at 62:56. Bekah Marcis was credited with the assist on the play. With the goal and assist in the game, Habein has now recorded at least three points in three of the last four games. She now has 15 points on the year which is second-best on the team.

Concordia finished the game by outshooting Bethel (8-7-2/1-7-2 MIAC) 14-5 in the game. CC also had a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord made four saves to earn her 10th win of the year. Charli Sorensen stopped 10 shots in goal for BU.

The Cobbers will finish off the regular season by playing at St. Ben's on Saturday, Nov. 1 at noon. A Cobber win or tie and CC will earn a spot in the conference tournament.
