Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/12/10)-- Concordia scored three times in the second half and rolled past Hamline 4-0 on Tuesday in Moorhead. The Cobbers received goals from four different players as they moved to 8-5-2 overall and 6-1-2 in conference play.

Playing with a 10-20 mph wind blowing out of the north, the Cobbers went against the wind in the first half and battled to put the ball in the Piper goal. Hamline (4-9-0/0-7-0 MIAC) had a pair of chances early in the game and posted a pair of corner kicks in the first three minutes of play, but from that point forward they would be limited to any offensive chance.

Concordia had several quality opportunities in the first 10 minutes and finally got on the board in the 14th minute. Sophomore Sarah Rounds cleaned up a failed clearance attempt, knocked the ball by a pair of Hamline defenders and then poked the ball into the net. Rounds' unassisted goal at 13:42 was her eighth of the year and would be the only scoring by either team in the first 45 minutes.

The Cobbers had the better of the play in the opening period and outshot Hamline 20-2. Concordia had several other golden chances in the first half but they either were off frame or shot right at the Piper goalie or defender. On two occasions, a Hamline defensive back cleared the ball off the goal line after it had gone by starting goalie Liz Stock.

Concordia went with the wind in the second half and continued to miss opportunities. CC had four shots and several chances before finally getting the back-breaking second goal of the game. Sue Obermiller ran on to a ball served from defender Alexa Westbee and slotted it past Stock. The goal came at 67:47 and started a streak of three CC goals in a span of eight minutes.

Abby Habein netted the third goal for Concordia. Obermiller picked up her third point of the game on the goal at 70:22. Senior central midfielder Brittany Mayer finished off the scoring when she hit a one-time shot from the top of the penalty area that found the lower right hand corner of the net. The goal at 75:42 was Mayer's first of the season and third of her career.

The final 15:00 were played at a leisurely back-and-forth pace with neither team playing with the energy to press for an offensive attack. In the end Concordia wound up outshooting Hamline 29-4 in total shots and 12-2 in shots on goal. Rounds had a game-high eight shots for the Cobbers while Sam Johnson had six shots and Habein added five.

Ali Nelson had two saves in goal for Concordia to earn her fifth shutout of the year and 15th of her career. Stock turned aside eight shots for the Pipers.

Concordia will host their final home game of the 2010 regular season when they square off against St. Kate's on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m.
