Cobbers win MIAC playoff championship
Brian Nelson scored three goals on the day, the last one on a penalty shot in a 15-minute mini-game that gave Concordia a 1-0 win over St. Thomas to advance into the NCAA Division III playoffs as the MIAC's automatic qualifier.
The Cobbers, who lost 4-2 Saturday, rallied from a 1-0 deficit Sunday with four unanswered goals in the second period en route to a 5-2 win. That forced the mini-game, and Nelson's penalty shot at 10:53 stood up as the only scoring in the game.
The Cobbers' Bryan Howard stopped 23 of 25 shots in the regular game, allowing just two power-play goals. Howard stopped all eight shots in overtime. UST's Brad Moore stopped 22 of 27 shots and five of six in the mini-game.
Rob Gramer added a goal and two assists for the Cobbers, who avenged a 1999 playoff loss in the finals to St. Thomas.
UST, now 24-3-2, had a 12-game win streak halted. The Toms will wait to hear whether they receive the lone at-large bid into the eight-team national tourney which begins with a March 10-11 quarterfinal series.
