Season Outlook and Notes:
1999 Ole football team ready to make move
NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- St. Olaf College enters the 1999 season optimistic about its chances in what looks to be an up-for-grabs Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With 16 starters back, the Oles expect to climb the conference ladder in a hurry and push for the conference title.
St. Olaf finished 2-8 in 1998 for the second consecutive season. However, the Oles made huge strides between 1997 and '98. Although they finished with the same record, head coach Paul Miller's Oles cut their average margin of defeat by almost 10 full points in 1998, and drastically improved their time of possession. Miller enters his third collegiate season at the helm after coaching Apple Valley High School to two state titles. Minus a handful of players, St. Olaf will field the same team for essentially the third year in a row, counting on increased strength and experience to lead it through its 1999 campaign.
The Ole defense looks to be solid all-around. Led up-front by senior co-captain defensive end Sven Bjorklund and junior tackle Jeremy Young, St. Olaf will field a formidable front seven. Young and Bjorklund both were named All-MIAC last year, to the first and second teams respectively. An All-MIAC honorable mention in 1998, senior co-captain Ben Dieterich will start for his second consecutive season at a linebacker position. St. Olaf returns its entire secondary, including sophomore cornerback Steve Ryan, named All-MIAC first team in his freshman year. Ryan, who also earned the MIAC Player of the Week award once last year, will shatter the school record for career interception if he continues at his current pace.
The biggest question for the Ole offense will be who will call the signals. St. Olaf loses two-time captain and team MVP Peter Schultz to graduation and will look to youth to replace him. Two juniors and a sophomore will compete for the job. Senior Ryan Hollom and sophomore Brian Sprout return at the two wideout spots, giving whoever emerges at quarterback quality targets, as the two were named to the All-MIAC first and second teams in 1998. Sophomore Jeff Flugum, All-MIAC second team in 1998, will return at center to anchor an offensive line that returns three starters and its tight end.
Special teams, a typical strength of St. Olaf football, should prove excellent in 1999. Senior kicker Haakon Nelson returns for his third year on the job, and should provide excellent support for the Ole offense.
Though not the favorite to win the conference, eyes around the
league will be watching the Oles this season as they continue their upward
climb under Miller's tenure. Some questions remain unanswered, but
a solid returning core that has grown stronger with a dedicated off season
program should aid St. Olaf in their quest for a MIAC championship.
