Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID

The 1999-2000 Gustavus menís basketball team will be sporting an entirely new look due to the graduation of six of its top nine players from a squad that compiled a record of 24-6 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last year.  Gone are all-conference selections Luke Schmidt (6-7, post), Bob Southworth (6-2, wing) and Marc Newell (6-8 post) along with three-year starter Mark McDonnell (6-3, wing), Joel Stoltenow (6-3, point guard) and Mike Kauls (6-2, wing).

Head Coach Mark Hanson and assistant coach Mike Boschee will build this yearís squad around a trio of returning regulars including senior post Hans Engebretson, senior point guard Brent Olson and sophomore wing Kirk Walberg.  Engebretson and Olson are solid veterans who have been through the MIAC basketball wars for three years and will provide excellent leadership. Walberg gained valuable experience with extended playing time last season and was given the MIACís Sixth Man Award for his significant contributions off the bench for the Gusties last year. These three will need to adjust to their new roles as starters, however, they all contributed in crunch-time during the Gusties tournament run last year and are no strangers to the rigors of MIAC and NCAA basketball.

The rest of the equation for coach Hanson and coach Boschee is uncertain and it will take some time (as it does every year) for this team to establish its identity, however, there is talent on this squad and the questions lie in what players will fill the roles that will allow the team to play its best basketball.  The group of players that are competing for the remaining spots includes junior post Bobby Johnson (a transfer from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD), junior wing Jeff Sehr (a transfer from South Dakota State), junior point guard Mark Gustavson, sophomore post Chad Henke, sophomore wing Zach Takle, sophomore wing Tony Taylor (a transfer from Southwest State University) and senior wing Travis Quast.  Transfers Johnson and Sehr have looked strong in early season practice and are making strong bids for starting roles.  Johnson played regularly at Augustana for the last two years. He is an athletic player who is physical enough to bang on the inside and still go outside and hit the 15 to 18 foot jumper.  Sehr, who saw limited playing time at South Dakota State, brings quickness and a strong competitive spirit to the squad.  Mark Gustavson is a junior who has paid his dues as a reserve on the varsity for the past two years. He is expected to contribute in some fashion whether it be as a starter or off the bench.  Chad Henke spent his freshman year learning the Gustavus system from veteran posts Marc Newell and Luke Schmidt.  He is undersized at 6-4, however, he is a strong rebounder and a tenacious defender.  Perimeter depth will be provided by senior Travis Quast, sophomore Zach Takle and sophomore Tony Taylor.  Quast, who saw limited action last season, has very quick feet and has good three-point range, while Takle is a versatile player who is very quick as well as being a tremendous leaper and Taylor is a pure-shooter who can light it up from beyond the three-point arc.

The roster is filled out by sophomore post Kirk Overaas (6-6) and freshmen Hans Sviggum (5-8, point guard), Luke Westman (6-0, point guard), David Newell (6-5, wing) and Derek Nelson (6-4, post).  Just as Kirk Walberg exploded on to the scene last year and was a surprise contributor, Coach Hanson would welcome one (or more) of the above mentioned players to step up and show that he is capable of contributing on a regular basis this year.
