Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID

Macalester is coming off its best MIAC season in 10 years and with four starters back the Scots are optimistic for a good season and a run at the league's upper division under third-year coach Curt Kietzer.

Several key players return for the Scots, but Macalester must find a way to replace All-MIAC forward T.J. Mahony, one of the league's best defensive players over the last four years.  Macalester relies heavily on playing good defense and must continue to do so if it is to find success.  Last year the Scots forced 19 turnovers a game and held their opponents under 70 points in half of their games.

The Scots will be led by a couple of sophomores who had no trouble adjusting to the collegiate game last winter.  Patrick Russell (So., Plymouth, MN / Wayzata) was named Columbus Multimedia West Region Freshman of the Year after knocking down 71 three-pointers and averaging 14.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.  Chris Palm (So., Hudson, WI) was one of the best defensive guards in the MIAC as a freshman as his 67 steals put him among the national leaders.

Forward Doug Hoffert (Sr., Bloomington, MN / Jefferson) averaged 10.9 points a game and made 48 three-pointers and has been a starter for the Scots since his freshman season.  Point guard Evan Bass (Jr., Chandler, AZ) dished out 3.2 assists per game and had 45 steals.

"We will still be young, but deeper and a bid more talented than we've been in recent years," said Coach Kietzer.  "We're hoping this will translate into continued progress for Macalester basketball."
