Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID

It wasn't the ending that Bob Biebel would have written, but in the topsey-turvey 1998-99 season, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team's season-ending loss to Bethel was a fitting end. Only once all season (a span of 22 games) did the Cardinals not enjoy the thrill of at least a two-game winning streak, or the agony of a two-plus-game losing streak.

It all started with a two-game winning streak to open the season and ended with a two-game losing streak that included the 69-55 loss to Bethel. In between, SMU rode out losing streaks of four and eight games, while also enjoying the view from the crest of four-game and two-game winning streaks. And all the highs and lows definitely left Biebel & Co. with mixed emotions. "I thought we made great strides this season," said Biebel, whose team finished eighth in the final conference standings with a 7-13 record.
"There's no doubt in my mind we could have finished a .500 team. We just weren't able to knock down the big shots when we needed them."

This year, Biebel is hoping that, with a cast that includes All-MIAC selection Ryan Rankin (Green Bay, Wis.) and sharpshooter J.B. Mathison  who missed last season with a knee injury, after averaging 16.2 ppg en route to honorable-mention all-conference honors two years ago. the Cardinals will continue to make strides toward the top of the MIAC heap.

"I honestly feel that we are ready to make our move up," said Biebel, who any one of a number of talented freshmen to step in and produce for the Cardinals. "I think we've regained that hunger to win " and that's real encouraging. We put ourselves in position to win a number of ball games (last year) hopefully, we can make another giant stride this year."
