Season Outlook/Notes:
by Eric Vegoe
Sports Information Student Writer

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Last season the MIAC boasted what probably was the most talented collection of players the league has ever seen. However, with the loss of 13 All-MIAC players, most notably Augsburg's Devean George (now of the Los Angeles Lakers), Bethel's Eric Joldersma, Gustavus' Luke Schmidt and Carleton's Josh Wilhelm, the conference will be up for grabs.

"Teams that bring back experienced players have an advantage over the teams that lost players," said St. Olaf head coach Dan Kosmoski.

Unfortunately for the Oles, they graduated four starters and now have only one senior. The team will need its younger players to step up. The Oles finished 12-12 last season, but their younger players are eager to see how they stack up against the MIAC. The Oles will rely on their perimeter shooting and quickness.

"Where our scoring will come from is relatively unknown," Kosmoski said. "We have the capability to be a good shooting team.

"We're quicker than we were last season, and we are a physically strong team. However, there are still a lot of unknowns we'll address as the season progresses."

Junior Ryan Olson (Maple Grove, Minn.) is one of the best shooters in the conference and will be counted on to pick up the slack for a team that lost 75 percent of its scoring. Lone senior Steve Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) also will be a factor, giving the Oles a scorer and someone who has been in the trenches.

Look for sophomores Jeb Johnson (Wadena, Minn.) and Matt Hofkens (Neenah, Wis.) to play a lot of minutes at the guard positions. They bring intensity on defense and will use their quickness to score.

Inside the Oles have to replace last season's frontline -- Justin Herzog, Matt Jensen and Chad Anderson. The Oles have a few underclassmen who will be given a chance to fill those holes. Sophomores Andy Covert (Faribault, Minn.), Hallie Williams (Woodbury, Minn.) and Matt Grimsrud (Zumbrota, Minn.) all have looked strong in the early weeks of practice and continue to improve. In addition, first-years Mike Ludwig (Blaine, Minn.) and Tim Nelson (Braham, Minn.) could see some time as the Oles search for the right chemistry.

The Oles likely will be one of the younger teams in the conference. There is no question relatively inexperienced players will have the opportunity to step up. The lack of playing experience is a concern, so as the season rolls on the Oles will need to define what kind of team they want to be.

"We have to be as solid defensively as we were last year and find a way to rebound the ball," Kosmoski said. "We don't know how good we can be yet, but we'll keep our eyes wide open and hang on for the ride."

St. Olaf is a four-year, co-educational liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) with a student enrollment of 2,998 and a full-time faculty of 257. The college is known nationally for its art, music, science, pre-medicine, mathematics, pre-law, international studies and religion curricula. It is one of Money Guide's top 100 "elite values in college education today," and it leads the nation's colleges in number of students who study abroad.
