Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID

Coach Steve Fritz' 20th season should be an interesting one. The Toms had an 11-year streak of MIAC playoff appearances end last season as they tied for fourth at 12-8 and lost the tie-breaker. UST's 14-10 finish included five losses by six or less points. The Toms went 0-6 against MIAC leaders Gustavus, Augsburg and Bethel, but hope to get some revenge this year as those three teams all lost marquee players. In fact, a strong recruiting class and a solid returning group probably puts the Toms among the MIAC preseason favorites.

After being undersized in recent seasons, the Toms at least boast better height, with 11 of their 21 players standing 6-5 or taller.

The Toms return three starters, including three-year starters and two-time All-MIAC players Kip Sparby (6-5) and Joe Buri (6-4). Sparby has 192 career 3-pointers and already has surpassed 1,000 points and 500 rebounds on his career. Buri (867 points, 367 rebounds) should reach both milestones this season. Another scorer back is soph Mark Buri (6-2), who can penetrate or hit the three.

Sophs Cole Butler (6-foot-8), and Teddy Swanson (6-7) have played center in 1998-99 and 1997-98,  respectively. Junior transfer Mike Wrobel (6-7) -- who ironically hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer for Concordia to beat the Toms last season -- give UST three experienced inside players.

Several other newcomers could contribute -- including incoming freshmen Kevin Fitzgerald (6-9) of St. Thomas Academy; Nic Marx (6-5) of Benilde-St. Margaret; Mark Paulson (6-8) of Coon Rapids; Brendan Finn (5-10) of Minnetonka; and Jimmy Sioris (6-4) of Edina. Brian Lynch (6-8), a 1998 Minneapolis DeLaSalle grad who attended Marquette but didn't play last season, is among the others pushing for minutes.
