1999-2000 MIAC Co Men's Hockey Players of the Week
March 7, 2000

Concordia goalie Bryan Howard (Jr., Gold River, CA, Brooks School HS) and Concordia wing Brian Nelson (Fr., Moorhead, MN, Moorhead HS) led the Cobbers to the MIAC Playoff championship Saturday in St. Paul. The 5-2 win Saturday and a 1-0 victory in the subsequent mini-game earned the Cobbers their first NCAA bid since 1987. The Cobbers are 20-7-2 heading into this week's first round NCAA series at UW-Superior March 10-11.

Howard stopped 23 of 25 shots Saturday in the first game and then 8 more shots in the mini-game. He led the MIAC this year with a 2.17 goals against average and a 12-2-1 record. Neslon scored 3 goals on Saturday, 2 in the 5-2 win in the regulation and then the series winner on a penalty shot in the mini-game. Nelson has 22 goals and 9 assists for the Cobbers this year.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week

St. Thomas goalie Brad Moore (FR-Lakeville). He stopped 26 of 28 shots in Sunday's 4-2 win and stopped all 20 shots in Monday's 3-0 win, helping Tommies reach MIAC playoff finals for the 14th time in 15-year history of the event. He beat St. John's four times this season, allowing four goals, with two shutouts. He's 21-1-1 on season with .900 save percentage and 2.67 GAA. St. Thomas is 23-2-2, ranked second in nation.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Co-Players of the Week

St. Thomas wings Steve Aronson (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Brian Bolf (Sr., Hibbing, Minn.) --

Linemates Aronson (10 points) and Bolf (nine points) carried the Tommies to a 5-2, 9-6 sweep of Bethel and let the team clinch the outright MIAC championship with a 14-1-1 finish, one game ahead of Concordia. Aronson had two goals and two assists Friday then added three goals and three assists Saturday. Bolf had four assists Friday and two goals and three assists Saturday. Aronson now has 222 career points, five away from becoming the UST career leader and 12 away from breaking a 35-year-old MIAC record. He won the MIAC scoring title for the second year in a row with 49 points in 16 games. Bolf has played just three years at UST but reached 160 career points Saturday night. Bolf won the MIAC scoring title in 1997-98 and took second to Aronson in each of the last two years. In their last 24 games vs. MIAC opponents, the Tommies are 21-1-2. In those 24 games, Aronson has 70 points (37g-33a) and Bolf has 53 (14g-39a). The Tommies, 21-2-2, are ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, and host St. John's in a best-of-two MIAC semifinal series Sunday and Monday at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week

Concordia forward Brian Nelson (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) --

Nelson had 5 goals and an assist in Concordia's 9-3, 8-0 sweep at Gustavus. The two weekend wins helped Concordia wrap up its best MIAC record in school history, finishing 13-2-1. Nelson scored Concordia's first and fourth goals in Friday night's 9-3 win and the turned in the natural hat trick on Saturday, scoring Concordia's second, third and fourth goals. Nelson now has 18 goals and 8 assists on the year through 21 games.

Concordia's Brady Burgess (So., 6-0, 175, Moorhead, Minn.) --

Brady Burgess scored three goals and had one assist over the weekend to help lead Concordia to a 4-3 and 9-3 sweep at St. John's. Burgess leads Concordia in scoring with 11 goals and 15 assists. The two Cobber wins guaranteed Concordia home ice for the first round of the MIAC Playoffs and a finish of now worse than second in the MIAC race. Concordia is now 11-2-1 in the MIAC, 15-4-2overall.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week
Feb. 1, 2000

Ryan McIntosh, Augsburg goalie (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) --

McIntosh faced a barrage of Concordia-Moorhead shots -- 84 to be exact -- in a two-game series over the weekend, and made 82 saves (.976 save percentage) in a 2-1 loss and 1-0 win. McIntosh made 46 saves in Friday night's loss and stopped all 36 shots he faced in a 1-0 shutout win, notching his second shutout of the year. McIntosh now has a 3.27 goals-against-average and a .905 save percentage this season.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week

Steve LaMere, Augsburg center (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) -- LaMere had a four-point weekend in leading Augsburg to a tie and win in a two-game series against Gustavus. The wins keep Augsburg in the hunt for a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs. LaMere's goal with 21 seconds left in the third period gave Augsburg a 2-2 tie at Gustavus on Friday, and he assisted on three of Augsburg's  six goals, including two power-play tallies, as the Auggies topped the Gusties 6-4 on Saturday at Augsburg. This season, LaMere, the Auggies' captain, has three goals and 15 assists for 18 points. In conference play, LaMere has two goals and nine assists for 11 points.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week
Jan. 18, 2000

Brad Moore, St. Thomas goalie (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) -- Moore stopped all 18 shots in Friday's 5-0 win over Gustavus, then stopped 21 of 23 in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Gusties. It was just the Toms' second regular-season sweep of the Gusties in 11 seasons. On the season, he has a 2.40 goals-against-average and with a .910 GAA. He improved his season record in goal to 11-0-1. St. Thomas improved to 5-0-1 in the MIAC and 12-1-2 on the season.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week
Jan. 10, 2000

Denny O'Connor, St. Mary's forward (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) -- O'Connor picked up seven points, including the game-winning goal and two assists in the Cardinals' 5-4 upset victory over UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. O'Connor, who started the weekend with four assists in SMU's 12-1 rout of UW-Eau Claire, picked up a pair of assists as SMU jumped out to a 4-2 lead over the Pointers after two periods. After Stevens Point closed the gap to one, 4-3, O'Connor netted what proved to be the game-winner -- recording his first goal of the season to go with a team-leading 12 assists.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Co-Players of the Week
Dec. 14, 1999

Andy Disch, St. Thomas forward (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) -- Disch scored four goals -- one off the UST record -- in Friday's 5-4 comeback win at Marian College. Disch scored 3:05 into the match for a 1-0 lead and scored again in the second period for a 3-2 lead. UST trailed 4-3 in the third period when Disch scored a power-play goal at 13:15. Disch scored what proved to be the game winner less than three minutes later at 15:48 of the period. In Saturday's 5-5 tie at No. 7-ranked St. Norbert, Disch scored one goal, to close with a five-goal weekend. The Toms, ranked No. 4 in Division III, are still unbeaten on the season at 7-0-2.

Jaroslav Cesky, Augsburg forward (Fr., Prague, Czech Rep./New Prague, Minn., HS) -- Cesky had two goals and an assist to lead Augsburg to its biggest win of the season so far, a 6-4 win at Wisconsin-Stevens Point in an MIAC/NCHA challenge game on Friday night. Cesky scored Augsburg's first two goals, including one on the power play, as the Auggies rallied from a 3-1 first-period deficit to claim a win over the Pointers, who entered the game rated No. 2 in the nation in the US College Hockey Online Division III national poll. He added an assist on Steve LaMere's game-tying shorthanded goal in the second period. Augsburg also beat Wisconsin-Eau Claire 2-1 on Saturday to improve to 4-5-1 overall. Cesky leads the team with six goals and 13 points.

1999-2000 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week
Dec. 7, 1999

Tony Lawrence, St. Thomas forward (So., 6-0, 200, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) -- Lawrence scored three goals and three assists in the Toms' 5-0 and 6-2 MIAC sweep of St. John's. He had a pair of goals and one assist in Friday's home shutout, then added a goal and two assists in Saturday's road victory. Lawrence transferred to UST from the Air Force Academy, where he played last season. The Tommies, ranked No. 6 nationally, are 6-0-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in the MIAC. They are 10-0-2 in their last 12 games vs. conference foes dating back to last season.

Offensive  Player of the Week

Bethel forward Kevin Adam (Sr., Caronport, Sask./Caronport HS) -- Adam had an explosive weekend for the Royals as Bethel suffered a disappointing 3-2 loss to St. Scholastica on Friday and rebounded to beat the nation's second-ranked team, Wisconsin-Superior, 8-5 on Saturday. Adam, Bethel's career leader in goals, scored Bethel's only two goals of the game in Friday's loss to St. Scholastica. In Saturday's win, Adam tied a school record with five assists, and also added Bethel's third goal to lead the Royals to their first win of the season. Adam's six points were one shy of the school record for points in a game.

Defensive Player of the Week

St. Mary's goalie Fred Hennen (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) -- Hennen was in goal for both games for the Cardinals last weekend. The senior stopped 32 of 34 shots in Friday's 2-2 tie with Wisconsin-River Falls, then posted a 28-save performance in the Cardinals' 6-2 win over Wisconsin-Stout. For the weekend, Hennen stopped 58 of 62 shots, recording a .935 save percentage and a 1.92 goals-against-average.

Offensive  Player of the Week

Steve Aronson, St. Thomas forward (Sr., Minnetonka , Minn.) -- Aronson opened his season with nine points (five goals, four assists) in two games against one of the top goalies in NCAA Division III (Augsburg's Ryan McIntosh). The Tommies rallied for a 6-6 tie Friday and an 8-3 win Saturday over the Auggies for a three-point team weekend. Friday, Aronson had three goals, then with UST trailing 6-5 won a face-off with four seconds left and got the puck to Brian Waldo, who stroked a 30-foot shot with one second left that forced overtime. Aronson had two goals and three assists in Saturday's game. Aronson, a two-time All-American, now has 162 career points.

Defensive Player of the Week

Rick Gregory, St. John's goalie (Fr., Flin Flon, Manitoba/ Notre Dame HS) -- Gregory went 1-0-1 this weekend against Bethel. On Friday night at Mariucci Arena, Gregory had 34 saves in a 7-4 win over the Royals. On Saturday, Gregory entered the game in the second period and stopped all 19 shots he faced the rest of the game to salvage a 3-3 tie. Gregory is currently 2-0-1 on the season with a 2.18 goals-against-average and a 92.1-percent save percentage. SJU is currently 2-1-1 overall and in the MIAC.

Offensive  Player of the Week

Gustavus junior forward Josh Kramer (Moorhead, Minn., Moorhead HS) scored two crucial goals this weekend as the Gusties picked up three of a possible four points against St. Mary's with a 3-3 overtime tie on Friday in Winona and a 4-3 overtime victory in St. Peter on Saturday. Kramer only scored two goals in the series, however, those two goals were game savers for the Gusties. On Friday night, with Gustavus trailing 3-2, Kramer was selected to take a penalty shot with :14 seconds remaining in regulation play and he converted the shot which tied the game at 3-3 and sent the contest into overtime. The game ended in a 3-3 tie. On Saturday, Kramer scored a shorthanded goal two minutes into overtime giving the Gusties a thrilling 4-3 win over the Cardinals. Gustavus is now 1-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in MIAC play after one week of play.

Defensive Player of the Week

Concordia goalie Bryan Howard (All-MIAC Jr. G, 6-0, 180, Gold River, CA, Brooks School HS) had 25 saves on Friday in Concordia's 8-1 win at Hamline and stopped five break-away attempts. He had 11 saves in two shutout periods of work in Saturday's 6-0 shutout of Hamline.
