5/07 Concordia Sweeps Into Playoffs
With Two Wins Over Carleton.
Series Summary -
Concordia relied on their offense to sweep Carleton 8-1 and 19-2, and
claim the fourth and final spot in the MIAC playoffs.
The Cobbers hammered out 27 runs and 27 hits to earn the crucial two wins and gain a spot in the postseason playoffs for the first time since 1995.
Concordia seniors, playing in their final home series, led the Cobber offensive attack. Catcher Isaac Hjermstad (Sr., Park Rapids, Minn.) went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with three RBI's and a home run, and fellow senior Jesse Rostad (Sr., Barnesville, Minn.) matched that output going 4-for-8 with five RBI's and a home run.
All totaled for the series, 10 Cobber players had hits, nine players
scored runs and
nine players had multiple hits.
In the first game Concordia scored eight runs in four innings to down Carleton 8-1.
The Cobbers scored first in the third inning when Tim Miller (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) led off with a single and stole second. Rostad hit a ball deep in the hole that Carleton shortstop Drew Dean mishandled and allowed Miller to score and Rostad to reach safely. The Cobbers blew the game open in the fourth when catcher Hjermstad homered to left field plating Chad Felstul (Jr., Morris, Minn.) for a three-run advantage.
The Cobbers scored five more times in the next two innings behind four hits and three wild pitches. Concordia had eight different players score in the game.
Felstul had the hot bat for Concordia in the first game as he went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Sophomore pitcher Travis Anderson (Fargo, N.D.) went all seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits. He keeps his record perfect at 3-0 and lowers his team-leading ERA to 2.19.
In the second game the Cobbers pounded Knight pitching for 19 runs on 19 hits. It is the biggest offensive output of the season, and the most runs scored since last season when Concordia beat Carleton 20-5 on April 1st.
Concordia had multiple run innings in five of their six at-bats, and scored 11 runs in the third and fourth innings.
The Cobbers used five pitchers in the win, conserving the staff for the MIAC playoffs. Starter Isaac Triebold (So., Oriska, N.D.) picked up his first win of the season, pitching two innings and allowing one run. After the fourth inning the trio of Justin Berg (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.), Eric Wold (Sr. Fargo, N.D.) and Jeremy Hinderks (Fr., Renville, Minn.) shut the Knights down, limiting them to just one hit in three innings.
Hjermstad and Rostad combined for six hits in the game, while Derek Dormanen (So., Menahga, Minn.), who is leading the MIAC in hitting, went 1-for-4 with a home run.
Concordia earns the right to play St. Olaf in the first round of the MIAC playoffs, which start on Friday May 11th at 3:30 in Northfield. The Cobbers finish the MIAC with a 12-8 record, their best mark since 1995. They finish the regular season with a 13-11 mark. Carleton slides to 2-16 in league play and 4-30 overall.
