4/13 Concordia Sweeps St. John's
2-0, 8-1 in a Cold, Blustery Doubleheader.
Series Summary -
Concordia used a strong pitching performance in the first game and
an offensive explosion in the second to sweep St. John's 2-0, 8-1 on a
cold and blustery afternoon in Perham, MN.
In the first game, sophomore pitcher Bryan Marudas (Hinckley, MN) threw a one-hit shutout to lead the Cobbers to the two-run Concordia scored both runs in the bottom of the first inning and Marudas made them hold up, as he picked up his first win of the season. The Johnnies were only able to scratch out two hits and never had a runner get past first base.
The start of the doubleheader was postponed for almost 15 minutes due to slight rain showers. After the delay, Marudas sent the Johnnies down in order in the top half of the first, before Concordia was able to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Kvidt (So., Detroit Lakes, MN) led off and singled to left field. Jesse Rostad (Sr., Barnesville, MN) sacrificed Kvidt to second and Chad Felstul (Jr., Morris, MN) walked to put runners at first and second. Matt Nustad's (Sr., Detroit Lakes, MN) grounded to second base and Johnnie secondbaseman Matt Pilon threw wildly to first enabling Kvidt to score all the way from second. Consecutive walks to Tim Miller (Jr., Bloomington, MN) and Derek Dormanen (So., Menahga, MN) brought home another run, and the two-run cushion was all that Marudas would need to finish the game.
Dormanen was the offensive leader for Concordia in the first game as he went 2-for-2 with a walk and had a clutch RBI.
After the decisive first inning both teams struggled at the plate as Marudas and Johnson combined to give up only seven hits on the chilly, damp afternoon. Marudas also finished the game with nine strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Concordia's bats woke up and pounded St. John's pitching for 8 runs on 12 hits. Propelled by two big innings, the Cobbers gave starting pitcher Travis Anderson (So., Fargo, ND) all the ammunition he would need to pick up his first win of the young season.
A four-run third inning and a three-run fifth were the sparks that fanned the flames as Tim Miller and Chad Felstul used their power to punch out home runs, and Derek Dormanen once again had a multiple hit game, as he went 2-for-3. For the series Dormanen was a combined 4-for-5.
Anderson pitched six innings allowing one run and only two base runners to get past second base. For the game he allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out six. First year pitcher Jeremy Hinderks (Renville, MN) relieved Anderson and pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Concordia improves to 3-1 in the MIAC and 4-3 overall. St. John's drops
their opening league series to start the MIAC at 0-2, overall they have
a 2-8 record. The Cobbers will travel back to Perham tomorrow to host St.
Mary's at noon.
