4/26 Softball Drops Two Tight
Games to Carleton 2-1, 1-0.
Series Summary -
The Concordia pitching staff gave up only five hits in the two-game
series, but ended up losing both games to Carleton 2-1 and 1-0.
The Cobbers lost both games in the sixth inning as they couldn't string a big inning together, and were doomed by their inconsistent offensive output. Junior hurler Erin Gunderson (Jr., Princeton, Minn.) pitched a complete game in the first contest and only gave up one earned run on three hits. Senior Christine Moen (Sr., Glenwood, Minn.) pitched the series finale and gave up one earned run on two hits.
In game one, the Cobbers took the lead in the second inning when leadoff batter Amanda Schindeldecker (Jr., Menahga, Minn.) walked and then scored on a series of wild pitches. Carleton scored a run in the fifth when the Cobbers committed two errors in the inning allowing a leadoff walk to score with two outs in the inning. In the sixth the Knights took advantage of another Concordia miscue when they again scored with two outs in the inning.
Schindeldecker and Stacie Johnson (So., Belgrade, Minn.) were the only Cobbers to hit safely against Carleton starting pitcher Fauna Smith. Schindeldecker was 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored.
In the second game, Concordia was unable to score off of pitcher Andrea Carroll despite out hitting the Knights five to two. Moen gave up only two hits and earned the loss when Carleton was able to break the scoreless tie in the sixth inning. The Cobbers best chance to score in the game came in the second inning when Heather Stohs (Perham, Minn.) led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. After Johnson flied out to center Stohs advanced to third with only one out. The next Cobber hitter struck out followed by a ground out to the pitcher and chance went a-begging.
Stohs was 2-for-3 in the game and Schindeldecker added another hit, going 1-for-3. Schindeldecker has now reached base in all 14 Cobber games this season.
The loss drops Concordia's conference record to 6-4 while they fall
to 9-5 overall. Carleton improves to 6-8 and 9-13. The Cobbers will stay
in the Twin Cities and play Bethel tomorrow at 4:00. The next home doubleheader
is on Saturday when they host defending national champion St. Mary's at
1:00.
