Fr. Seattle, WA Led Concordia with 15 points in their tough 65-63 loss to St. Thomas. |
1/10 Concordia Comes Up Short,
is Edged by St. Thomas 65-63.
Concordia trailed throught the entire game but in the end had a chance
to tie the game and send it into overtime. Joe Snowden (St. Paul, MN) couldn't
find a handle on the ball as he went up to shoot a three-pointer and the
ball fell harmlessly to the floor as time expired, giving St. Thomas a
narrow 65-63 victory. The Tommies used their considerable size advantage
early and often to stake themselves to a six point halftime lead at 35-29.
The game continued to play the same in the second half as the Tommies banged
the ball inside and scored from inside the paint. The game turned around
in the final five minutes when Snowden and teammate Kevin Gilchrest (Fr.,
Seattle, WA) began to find their shooting touch. Both players made key
three-point baskets down the stretch to help pull the Cobbers within two
with just under 30 seconds to go in the game. After the teams traded turnovers,
the stage was set for Snowden to continue his heroics for the Cobbers but
the ball never got out of his hands and the Cobbers had to settle for their
second straight defeat.
Gilchrest led the Cobbers with 15 points while Snowden chipped in 14. Kermit Cooper (Sr., Freeport, BAH) kept St. Thomas from pulling away with stellar play underneath, finished with a season high 11 rebounds. Mark Buri (Jr., St. Paul, MN), the Tommies leading scorer coming into the game, continued to pace the team as he tallied 17 points. Mike Wrobel (Sr., Willmar, MN) won the battle of the boards and finished with a double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The loss drops the Cobbers to 3-3 in the MIAC and 6-4 overall. St. Thomas breaks out of their two-game losing streak and climbs to 4-3 in league play and 8-3 overall. Next up for Concordia is Macalester on Saturday, January 13th at 3:00 in St. Paul.

The Headline: Cobbers Face Early January Test
The Preview:
Concordia (3-2 in the MIAC, 6-3 Overall)
The Cobbers are coming off their first tough road trip of the season.
They hung on to down Carleton 62-61, and then traveled to St. Peter where
they started slow against Gustavus and ended up losing 82-71. This will
be the Cobbers third game in five nights, and is the start of a stretch
where they will play 6 games in 12 days (3 at home, 3 on the road). Concordia
is hoping to drive past this tough stretch and set themselves up for a
run at the MIAC playoffs. They are currently in a four team battle for
third place. Concordia has been led throughout the season by senior transfer
Joe Snowden (St. Paul, MN) he is currently averaging 19.1 points per game,
and he is in fourth place in MIAC scoring with a 18.0 PPG average. If he
can keep up his torrid pace he could become only the third Cobber since
the 1980's to average over 20 points per game. (The other two were - Daimen
Crump in 1996-97 and Brett Inniger in 1994-95)
St. Thomas (3-3 in the MIAC, 7-3 Overall)
St. Thomas is currently on a two-game MIAC losing streak. They are
coming off a tough one-point loss at the hands of Augsburg 62-61 on Monday.
The other loss was a 81-77 decision against league-leading Gustavus.
The Tommies are led by returning All-MIAC player Mark Buri (Jr., St. Paul,
MN). He is averaging 17.8 points per game to go along with 4.4 assists.
Another key contributor for St. Thomas who will be making his last appearance
in Memorial Auditorium is Mike Wrobel (Sr., Willmar, MN). Wrobel, a returning
All-MIAC performer, played his first two seasons at Concordia before transferring
to St. Thomas. In his two years at Concordia he averaged just under 10
PPG and since heading south he has averaged just over 11 PPG. Currently
he is second on the team in scoring (12.3) and first in rebounds (9.2).
He leads the MIAC in that category with an average of 9.7 bounds in league
play.
