1/17 Concordia Falls To St. John's
67-52.
Concordia couldn't crack the stingy St. John's defense and lost 67-52
at home. The Johnnies, entered the game holding their opponent's to a paltry
64 points, contained the Cobbers and forced 21 turnovers. St. John's broke
on top early as Troy Bigalke (Sr., Monticello) led the way scoring 13 first
half points. Concordia stayed within striking distance as junior guard
Robb Flint (Jr., Dilworth) made several key baskets, finished the half
with six points, and helped the Cobbers stay within eight at the break,
at 27-19.
Concordia came out of the locker room and went on a 6-2 run to get to within four but then Bigalke and Luke Witt (Jr., Red Wing) started a 16-1 run for the Johnnies and put the game out of reach at 45-26. Kermit Cooper (Sr., Freeport, BAH) played hard down the stretch as he finished with a season-high 15 points and 9 rebounds. Concordia was led by Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) who scored 16. St. John's top gun Troy Bigalke led all scorers with 19.
Concordia falls to 5-4 in the conference and 8-5 overall, while St. John's climbs their way to 6-3 in the MIAC and 8-5 overall. The Cobbers complete the first half of MIAC play on Saturday when they travel to St. Paul to take on Bethel at 3:00.

The Headline: Cobbers Prepare For Defensive Battle
Concordia (5-3 in the MIAC, 8-4 Overall)
Concordia is starting to find a rhythm, and position themselves for
a run at the MIAC playoffs. The Cobbers, winners of five of their
last seven games, will finish the first half of the MIAC on Saturday when
they travel to Bethel. The top six teams make the MIAC playoffs this year
and there are currently six teams that are within two games of the lead.
Look for the tight MIAC race to continue throughout the regular season.
Concordia is coming off a thrilling 69-68 come-from-behind victory over
St. Mary's. Concordia looked like they were down and out in the final minutes
until they received two huge baskets from non-starters Robb Flint (Jr.,
Dilworth, MN) and Nate Ohme (Fr., Bloomington, MN). Flint's driving layup
and Ohme's three-point basket helped pull the Cobbers to within one point
and set the stage for Jeff Ubben's (Jr., Moorhead, MN) last second free-throw
heroics. Concordia is an impressive 6-2 this year in games that are decided
by six points or less.
St. John's (5-3 in the MIAC, 7-5 Overall)
St. John's is coming off a 16 point victory over Hamline on Monday.
In that game Johnnie guard Ryan Keating (Jr., Minnetonka) scored 16 points
and added 6 assists. St. John's is led by senior wing Troy Bigalke (Monticello)
who is averaging 18.5 PPG, and is currently eighth on the all-time scoring
list at St. John's. Mike Nester (Jr., Redwood Falls) leads the team in
rebounds with a 6.4 RPG average.
Keating, who leads the team in assists, was the back-up quarterback
on the football team that finished second in Division III. He is a transfer
student from the University of Minnesota where he played one season on
the basketball team. He appeared in 13 games for the Gophers and scored
two points.

The Key Statistic: Opponent's
Scoring Average
St. John's leads the MIAC in opponent's scoring average, while Concordia
is third in the league. The Johnnies are holding their foes to a meager
64 points per game, and the Cobbers are close behind, holding their MIAC
opponent's to a 66 PPG average. St. John's has allowed only one MIAC team
to score more than 70 points (Augsburg - 79). Concordia is playing
at a similar rate, as they have allowed only two teams to score over 70
points (Augsburg - 82, Gustavus - 72).
The Key Match-Up: Mike Syverson # 40-
CC vs. Troy Bigalke #44 - SJU
Mike Syverson is coming off a solid 11-point performance on Monday
night. Troy Bigalke is the leading scorer for St. John's, averaging 18.5
points per game. He is also the second leading scorer in the MIAC. He has
been the Johnnies leading scorer in seven of their eight conference games.
Syverson's ability to guard Bigalke from the wing and in the post will
be a key factor in tonight's game.
The History: St. John's Leads
the Series 77-58.
Last year the two teams split the series, with each team winning at
home. In the first game, a 75-58 St. John's victory at Collegeville, the
Cobbers were paced by Jeff Ubben (Jr., Moorhead, MN) who scored 12 points,
and pulled down 7 rebounds. Concordia went to the free-throw line only
two times in that contest. In the second game Concordia was able to break
the St. John's defensive schemes and come away with a 68-62 victory in
Memorial Auditorium. The Johnnies hold a 15-6 advantage over the past ten
years.
