Jeff Ubben (Jr., Moorhead) steps up the defensive pressure against Gustavus forward David Newell. The Cobbers held the Gusties to 67 points, 12 below their average, in a tough 70-67 victory. 

2/5 Concordia Hangs on to Beat Gustavus 70-67.
Concordia used an intense defense and a big first half to defeat Gustavus 70-67. It was the first win for the Cobbers over the Gusties since 1996, and knocks Gustavus (12-4, 16-4) out of first place in the MIAC. Concordia (9-6, 12-7) limited Gustavus to 67 points, 12 below their average, and only 38 percent (23-for-60) shooting from the field. The Cobbers shot 45 percent (25-for-55) from the floor for the game. Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) was the game's high-scorer as he put down 23 points. It was his second straight game with 23 points. Mike Syverson  (Jr., Twin Valley, MN)  finished with a double-double, as he hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds and added 12 points.

Concordia puts themselves one-step closer to clinching a playoff spot. They now hold a three-game advantage over idle Macalester for the sixth and final spot. The Cobbers travel to St. Thomas on Wednesday for another key MIAC game.

Concordia vs. Gustavus Game Day Preview

The Headline: Cobbers Take Aim at MIAC Playoffs
Concordia (8-6 in the MIAC, 11-7 Overall)
Concordia is 3-1 in their last four games. They currently hold a 2 1/2 game lead for the sixth and final MIAC playoff spot. They are only 1 1/2 games behind fifth place St. Thomas, the Cobbers' opponent on Wednesday. During the four-game stretch the Cobbers are averaging 80 points per game, and playing some of their most exciting basketball in years. Concordia has been led by the emergence of a strong backcourt duo in Robb Flint and Joe Snowden. This stabiltiy at  the guard position along with the steadily improving play of Mike Syverson and Kermit Cooper has given the Cobbers the opportunity to climb in the MIAC ranks. Syverson has averaged 17 points over the last two games, while Cooper has hit for an average of 12.5 ppg and 7 rpg. Cooper has also provided some outstanding "highlight reel" plays including a monstrous alley-oop jam against Carleton.  The Cobbers will travel to St. Thomas on Wednesday and then play home on Saturday against Macalester. That will finish off a span of five games in ten days.

Gustavus (12-3 in the MIAC, 16-3 Overall)
Gustavus comes into the game with a 1/2 game lead over St. John's for the MIAC lead. That's the good news. The bad news is that the Gusties have dropped two of their last three games. They lost at home to St. John's last Wednesday 74-67, and dropped a heartbreaker on the road to St. Thomas 71-66. Gustavus has one of the best players in the league in guard Bobby Johnson (Sr., Jackson, MN). He is a returning All-MIAC player, and is currently fourth in the league in scoring with a 16.93 average. He is averaging 20 ppg over the last three games. The other dangerous players in the Gustie line-up are Kirk Walberg (Jr., Annandale, MN), a long range bomber who is currently third in the league in 3-point field goal percentage and Chad Henke (Jr., Gaylord, MN) who is Gustavus' inside threat. He is tied for second in the MIAC in rebounding an 8.37 rpg average.

The Key Statistic: Scoring Average
Gustavus leads the league in scoring, averaging 78.07 ppg, while Concordia is last in the league with a 66.86 average. The Cobbers, however, have upped their total over the last four games as they are averaging a red-hot 80 ppg during that stretch. In a reversal of fortune, Gustavus is only averaging 70 ppg in their last four games. Concordia is 3-1 in their recent offensive outbreak, while Gustavus is 2-2 during their offensive slow-down.

The Key Match-Up: Jeff Ubben - CC vs. Chad Henke - GAC
Both players are second on their team in scoring and while Jeff Ubben is second in rebounding, Chad Henke leads Gustavus in rebounds. Last time the two teams squared off Ubben was held to eight points, as he shot 4-for-9 from the field in Concordia's 11- point loss. Henke put up 18 points, and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

The History: Gustavus leads the Series 79-51.
Gustavus has won the last ten meetings between the teams. The last time Concordia won was on February 24th, 1996 in the MIAC playoff championship game. In that game the Cobbers won a defensive struggle 47-43. Daimen Crump (Seattle, WA) led the Cobbers with 15 points. Concordia and Gustavus would play five days later in the NCAA tournament, and the Gusties would extract revenge as they won 72-61.
