2/20 Cobbers Start February Frenzy
With Upset Win Over St. Thomas.
Concordia started February Frenzy by pulling off the biggest upset
in the MIAC playoffs in years, beating host St. Thomas 86-79.
The Cobbers, seeded sixth, came into the game having lost both regular season games to the third seeded Tommies. Jeff Ubben (Jr., Moorhead, MN) torched St. Thomas for a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Robb Flint (Jr., Dilworth, MN) also poured in a career-high, by knifing through the Tommie defense for a hard-earned 18 points. The Cobbers had the hot-hand from outside, sinking 9-of-13 shots from 3-point range. Mark Buri had a career night for St. Thomas, as he scored 37 points on 14-of-24 shooting from the field. Backcourt partner Mychal Brendan added 24 points. The two guards totaled 77 percent of the points for the Tommies.
Concordia (15-10) came out of the lockerroom and went right after St. Thomas, jumping to an early six point lead. The Cobbers only trailed twice in the first half and went into the break with a 42-35 lead. Concordia received key 3-point baskets from Trent Hagen (So., Pelican Rapids, MN) and Nick Killoran (Sr., Buffalo, MN) to keep St. Thomas from pulling off a multiple-point run.
St. Thomas (19-6) quickly pulled even in the second half, and the two teams traded leads in the opening minutes of the frame. The Cobbers would finally pull away for good behind the dominating presence of Ubben underneath. The Tommies closed to within three with 1:47 left in the game. Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) converted two free throws on the double bonus, and Mark Buri scored on a finger roll to push the score to 80-77. Kermit Cooper (Sr., Freeport, BAH) followed with what proved to be the deciding moment in the game when he jammed home a put-back off a missed shot. The lead was upped to five at 82-77, and St. Thomas would never get closer.
Concordia shot 53 percent (31-for-58) from the field in the game and an uncharacteristic 78 percent (15-for-19) from the free throw line. St. Thomas shot 51 percent on 32-of-62 shooting from the field. Along with the monster games from Ubben and Flint, Concordia received a strong performance from Trent Hagen who was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points. The victory was the first in six attempts for the Cobbers over the Tommies.
Concordia advances to the semifinals of the MIAC Tournament, and will take on St. John's in Collegeville on Thursday at 7:30.
