2/19 Concordia Holds Off Gustavus
61-58.
Concordia managed to hold off a late Gustavus rally and win 61-58 in
the first round of the first-ever MIAC playoffs. The Cobbers led 49-39
with just under seven minutes to play, but then Gustavus (14-11) slowly
whittled away at the lead and cut the gap to four at 54-50 with 2:47
left in the game. From that point on, Concordia (19-6) scrapped to
stay even with the Gusties, and hung on for the three-point victory. Sara
Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) carried Concordia in the crucial minutes
of the game, and finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was her
second straight game with a double-double and eighth of the year. Laura
Haugen had 16 points to lead Gustavus, while Kelly Etzel finished with
14 points and 10 rebounds.
Concordia staked their claim to the victory with seven minutes to go in the first half when they went on a 10-point run that turned a close 22-20 ball game into an uphill battle for Gustavus at 32-22. The Cobbers would take a 13-point lead, their biggest lead of the game, when Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND) scored on a lay-up with one minute to play in the first half before letting the Gusties close to 37-28 at the half.
In the second half Concordia flirted with a double figure lead for the first 13 minutes until Gustavus started to gather momentum and set the table for the dramatic finish to the game.
Both teams struggled from the field as Concordia struggled to shoot 33 percent (15-for-54) in the game, while Gustavus fared slightly better by hitting for 35 percent (24-for-67). Concordia had two other players, besides Spears, with 10 rebounds for the game. Sarah Jacobson (Sr., Fargo, ND) and Katrina Wilberts (So., Breckenridge, MN) came away with double figure in rebounds, and let the Cobbers neutralize Gustavus' height advantage underneath.
With the win Concordia advances to the semifinals of the inaugural MIAC
women's tournament. They will take on St. Thomas on Wednesday at 7:30 in
St. Paul.

Concordia vs. Gustavus Game Day Preview
The Headline: Tourney Time!
The Teams:
Concordia (16-5 in the MIAC, 18-6 Overall)
The wait is finally over, and it is time for the first-ever MIAC women's
basketball tournament. Concordia is the fourth seed and is 3-2 in their
last five games. Even though the team has been traveling through peaks
and valleys, Senior Sara Spears has been consistently touring the peak
region. Over the five-game stretch she is averaging 16 points and 9 rebounds
per game. Teammate Brandi Myers is closing in on a pair of records. She
is currently tied for the school, and MIAC, record in career 3-point baskets
with 162. Cathy Johnson (88-92) is the current record holder. Myers is
also within striking distance of the school's career steal record. She
has 288 steals on her career, and the record is 298 by Kristi Schultz (89-93).
Gustavus (11-10 in the MIAC, 14-10 Overall)
Gustavus is the fifth seed and also 3-2 in their last five games. The
Gusties waited until the final game of the season before clinching a playoff
spot. They were in position to clinch with three games to go, but subsequent
losses to Bethel and Hamline left them needing the victory on Saturday
against Augsburg. They responded by outscoring the Auggies 40-26 in the
second half.
