2/21 Concordia's Gutsy Effort
Falls Short at St. Thomas 71-57.
Concordia fought all the way to the end, but couldn't
get over the top and lost to St. Thomas 71-57 in the semifinals of
the MIAC tournament. The Cobbers playing for much of the game without the
injured Brandi Myers (Sr, Glyndon, MN) (ankle sprain) couldn't overcome
the quick perimeter play of the Tommies. St. Thomas made 33-of-41 free
throws in the game, while Concordia was 12-for-17 from the free throw line.
Concordia (19-7) was led by Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) and Katrina Wilberts (So., Breckenridge, MN) who tried to make up for Myers' 16 points per game average by taking the ball aggresively at the middle of the St. Thomas defense. Spears finished the game with 15 points and 7 rebounds, and Wilberts added 12 points and a game-high 8 rebounds. St. Thomas (23-2) was led by Jennifer Ulstad who scored 19 points, and Missy Pederson, who constantly put pressure on the Cobbers outside defense by driving to the basket, with 15 points.
Both teams had sub-par shooting nights as Concordia could only find the range at a 36 percent (21-for-57) rate, and St. Thomas managed to shoot only 38 percent (19-for-49).
The closest Concordia came in the game is when they went on a run midway
through the second half, and cut the lead to two at 43-41 with 9:30 left.
St. Thomas then went on a 7-0 run and kept the lead at eight points for
the remainder of the game. They were able to push the final margin to 14
in free throw shooting time.
