Season Outlook and Notes:
![]() |
Sr. Cokato, Minn. Senior guard will be the offensive captain in 2001-02. |
![]() |
Jr. Fargo, N.Dak. Sixth Player of the Year in the MIAC in 2000-01. Returning leading scorer and rebounder. |
Head Coach Sara Cepek will have to begin her second season at the helm of the Cobber women's basketball program with an entirely different game plan. Gone are last year's dynamic duo of Brandi Myers and Sara Spears who helped the team retain their upper-MIAC status. Present is a squad that has only one senior and boasts six first year players. The key to success for Cepek this season will be finding the right blend of players that can score and play defense at the same time. Both Spears and Myers were three-time All-MIAC players and they accounted for almost 40 percent of the team's total scoring. Myers led the team in scoring while Spears was the leader in rebounding. Filling the four shoes of last year's leaders will determine how high the Cobbers can climb in 2001-02.
The team will sport a new attitude toward offense and overall court quickness. They will make up for their lack of size underneath with speed on the perimeter. Mandy Berggren (Cokato, Minn.) who is the team's lone senior will have the dubious task of running the offense with potentially three first year players on the court at any given time. Berggren, who was second on the team in assists last season, will be counted on to take more shots and harness more of the scoring burden. The other returning player that will also play a big role in Concordia's season will be junior Kasey Bostow (Fargo, N.Dak.). Bostow averaged just over 10 points per game, making her the leading returning scorer. She also is the leading returning rebounder as well, averaging 4.4 rebounds per game last year. For her efforts she was named the MIAC's Sixth Player of the Year. A job description she will have to give up this year in order to help the team from a starting position.
Finding two players in the front court will be key for Cepek. Without the apparent size, the team will have to rely on quickness and being in the right spot. A trio of sophomores looks to give Concordia some presence underneath. Beth Drager (Wood Lake, Minn.), Becky Fitch (Sartell, Minn.) and Debbie Slack (Evansville, Minn.) all have the capability to provide solid minutes and a scoring threat now that they will see more time on the court. If the three should falter look for first year players Jamie Visness (Hallock, Minn.) and Gretta Stritesky (Ogilvie, Minn.). to step into the equation.
Finding a running mate for Berggren in the backcourt will be another piece of the puzzle Cepek will have to find. Two newcomers will be given the opportunity early. Mandy Pearson (Watkins, Minn.) brings an impressive resume from her high school career, and Nicole Plante (Fort Benton, Minn.) will provide quickness and smothering defensive attitude.
If Concordia can quickly get through the growing pains of having seven
new players on the court then the team has a shot at claiming one of the
top spots in the conference. With a tough early non-conference schedule
that features NCAA Division II power MSU-Moorhead and perennial Iowa conference
front-runner Luther, the Cobbers will be able to tell very quickly how
their quicker, more athletic squad will hold up in the MIAC.
