Cobbers Break Streak at St. Olaf - Split Twinbill With Ole's.

Sr. Fargo, N.Dak. Went 4-for-6 and hit his 2nd collegiate HR in Concordia's streak-breaking split at St. Olaf. |
Series Recap -
(NORTHFIELD)-- Concordia broke a 10-game losing streak in Northfield
in the first game of their doubleheader with St. Olaf winning 4-3, and
nearly pulled off an epic comeback in game two before losing 8-6 and settling
for the split in their MIAC twinbill with the Ole's.
The Cobbers had lost ten straight to St. Olaf in Northfield entering the first game, and needed a win to keep pace with undefested St. Thomas. Head Coach Bucky Burgau gave the start to MIAC Pitcher of the Week Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn./Renville County West HS), and he responded by throwing 4.2 innings without giving up an earned run. Derek Dormanen (Sr., Menahga, Minn./Menahga HS) came in to finish the final 2.1 innings and lead the Cobbers to a 4-3 victory and break the 10-game slide. Hinderks, pitching on only two days rest, struck out six and gave up six hits in picking up his fifth win of the season. He has now pitched 28.2 innings without giving up an earned run.
Concordia (3-1-0 MIAC, 11-9-1) jumped on St. Olaf (2-2 MIAC, 7-10-0) pitching early in the opened by scoring one run in the first inning and then three more in the third. The Ole's touched up Hinderks for an unearned run in the fifth and then tacked on two more runs with Dormanen pitching in the seventh. Dormanen struck out the final two Ole batters to pick his second save of the year. The middle of Burgau's lineup did most of the damage for the Cobbers. Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West HS), batting in the third spot, was 2-for-4. Clean-up hitter Ben Kvidt (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) was also 2-for-4 and Chris Siverson (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS), batting fifth, went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's.
In the second game, Concordia starter Bryan Romsa (So., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls HS) only lasted four batters and was unable to get a single out as the Ole's jumped on the sophomore hurler for two quick runs. They tacked on three more in the second and two in the third to bolt to a 7-0 lead after three frames.
The Cobbers started to whittle away at the lead in the top of the fourth, when Siverson hit a solo home run. It was only the second round-tripper of his career. Concordia added four more in the fifth inning to pull within two at 7-5. The big blow in the inning was a two-out, three-run double by Jim Johnson (Jr., Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS).
St. Olaf added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Concordia got the run back in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs and the team's best hitter, Dormanen, at the plate. Dormanen barely missed putting the barrel of the bat on the ball and flew out to right field to end the game.
Siverson matched his game one output by going for 2-for-3. He was 4-for-6 in the twinbill - scoring 4 of the Cobbers' 10 runs and driving in 3. Luther Kangas (Jr., Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake HS) and Johnson both went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
Concordia will host Carleton on Saturday, April 12 at 1:00pm, and then
face UM-Morris in a non-conference game at Concordia on Monday, April 14
at 4:00pm.
