Series Recap -
(MOORHEAD)-- Concordia received clutch, two-out hitting from unlikely
heroes - and swept Carleton 4-3, 2-1. The Cobbers scored all six runs on
the day with two outs in the inning. Concordia improves to 5-1 in
the MIAC and has now won six of the past seven games. Carleton drops their
fourth straight close game and falls to 1-5 in league play.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Concordia (13-9-1) spotted the Knights three runs in the second inning, and scratched four unanswered runs to prevail 4-3. Cobber starting pitcher Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn./Renville County West HS) entered the game without giving up an earned run in 28.2 innings and had his streak snapped when Tony LePage and Noah Brenner hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the second frame. Carleton scored two more runs in the inning, as the Cobbers committed two costly errors to keep the inning from ending.
Concordia started the comeback in the bottom of the third when they scored twice. Both runs came with two outs in the inning. The big hit in the frame belonged to Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West HS) who tripled to center field. His hit plated Luther Kangas (Jr., Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake HS), who had reached on an error to keep the inning alive. The Cobbers tacked on a lone run in the fourth inning when pinch-hitter Jack Dwyer (Jr., Bismarck, N.Dak./Shiloh Christian HS) singled through the left side and drove in Jim Johnson (Jr., Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS).
The game-winning run for Concordia came in the bottom of the sixth and again was delivered with two outs. After Bryan Romsa (So., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls HS) doubled to lead off the inning, Ben Kvidt (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Romsa to third. Dwyer struck out for the second out, and then Jesse Barnacle (Jr., Deer River, Minn./Deer River HS) singled to score the go-ahead run. Barnacle was the only Cobber with more than one hit in the game. He went 2-for-3, scored a run and had the key RBI.
Ben Phillips was the only Carleton player with more than one hit. He finished the game 2-for-3.
Derek Dormanen (Sr., Menahga, Minn./Menahga HS) pitched two scoreless inning in relief to pick up his third win of the season. Will Nissen pitched a complete game for the Knights. He scattered seven hits, struck out four and only allowed two earned runs.
In the second game, Concordia bolted to a 2-0 lead after two innings and then let three-headed pitching monster of Isaac Triebold (Sr., Oriska, N.Dak./Fargo South HS), Matt McLeod (So., Fargo, N.Da./Fargo South HS) and Dormanen shut the door on the Carleton offense. Triebold pitched the first four innings, gave up one run, five hits and struck out three. McLeod kept the Knights at bay for the fifth inning, allowing Bucky Burgau to get the ball in the hands of Dormanen. McLeod a single hit and struck out one. Dormanen cam on in the top of the sixth inning and pitched the final two innings without giving up a hit. He picked up his third save of the season. Dormanen was helped in the sixth inning by a spectacular defensive play from shortstop Nick Esala. After Dormanen hit Ben Cooprider, Luke Muellerleile hit a hard smash back up the middle of the infield. Esala got a great jump on the ball and was able to dive to his left, glove the ball and then flip it to second baseman Jesse Barnacle to start an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Once again Ben Phillips was the only Carleton hitter with more than one hit. He went 2-for-4 in the game and 4-for-7 for the doubleheader. Chris Siverson (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS) went 3-for-3 for the Cobbers and drove in the team's first run. Dormanen, who went hitless in the first game to break his five-game hitting streak, went 1-for-2 in the nightcap and drove in the game-winning run.
Concordia will host UM-Morris on Monday, April 14 at 4:00pm in a single,
nine-inning game. The Cobbers will then play at Macalester on Wednesday,
April 16 at 2:30.
