Had Concordia's lone extra-base hit in their two losses at St. Thomas.

The No. 4-ranked St. Thomas softball team hit five home runs on the day in a 9-0, 12-4 sweep of visiting Concordia in an MIAC doubleheader Wednesday on the Tommies' field. Both games were halted after five innings.

It was the conference openers for both teams. The Toms improved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC; Concordia is 4-9 and 0-2. St. Mary's (home sweep of St. Ben's) and Gustavus (home sweep of Augsburg) also started the MIAC season 2-0 with Wednesday sweeps.

Freshman Nikki Conway hit one homer in each game -- her fourth and fifth of the season -- and finished 4-for-5 with six RBI on the day while reaching base in all six trips. The Toms had 11 hits in four at-bats in each game. UST scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to build a 9-0 lead in game one, and led 9-0 after two innings of game two.

Mandy Bowlby went 4-for-5 on the day, and Michelle Wong, Kathleen Fitzpatrick and Kristi Huegel all had three hits. Besides Conway, Huegel, Fitzpatrick and Nagel all homered for the Toms, who have hit 13 HRs in 14 games.

UST senior Stacy Tamble, 6-1 on the season, won her 50th career game as she fanned five and allowed three singles and no walks in four innings of game one. Mandi Evans pitched the final inning.

In game two, starter Andrea Sweeney pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Reliever Janet Nagel struck out all three batters she faced in the fourth. Reliever Lindy Sparby allowed three runs -- all unearned -- after two two-out errors, in the fifth.

Concordia's Krystle Abrahamson (Fr.., Olivia Minn./BOLD HS) had an RBI double in the third inning of game two. The Cobbers scored three in the top of the fifth with two walks and two two-out errors.

Jamie Bang (Fr., Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had one hit in each game for the Cobbers and scored twice. Abrahamson, Shyla Wilson (Sr., Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS), Jill Faltau (Sr., Perham, Minn./Perham HS) and Steph Gemar (Jr., Felton, Minn./Shanley HS) all had one hit on the day.
