Cobbers Kick Off Cornstock by Blanking Macalester.

(MOORHEAD)-- Playing in the shadow of the Cornstock music festival, Concordia blanked Macalester for 12 innings and swept the Scots 5-0 and 8-0. The second game was called after the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule. The doubleheader sweep is the first time since April 15, 199 when they also shutout Macalester in both games of a doubleheader. The two wins stop a six-game losing streak for the Cobbers and push them to 7-11 in the MIAC and 11-20 overall.
The Cobbers received two different pitching gems to overpower the Macalester (6-12 MIAC, 11-22) bats. In the first game, Gretta Stritesky (Ogilvie, Minn./Ogilvie HS) retired the first 17 batters she faced in the game, and had her no-hit bid broken up with one out in the top of the seventh inning. She only allowed three baserunners and struck out five. By contrast, second game starter Steph Boesche (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) battled through five innings to pick up her team-leading sixth win of the year. Boesche worked her way out of jams in three different innings and only fanned one batter, but held the Scots scoreless through five innings.
Offensively in the first game Concordia scored four runs in the first three innings to seize control of the game from the onset. The Cobbers scored twice in the first and then tacked on single runs in the second and third innings. Leadoff hitter Jamie Bang (Fr., Hermantown, Minn/Hermantown HS) went 2-for-4 in the opener and scored two runs. Stacie Johnson (Sr., Belgrade, Minn./BBE HS) continued to belt the ball around the diamond, going 2-for-3 and driving in a run. The Cobbers had seven hits in the game.
In the second game, Concordia exploded in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game early. Clinging to a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Concordia scored three times in the frame and then added a quartet of runs in the fifth. The Cobbers collected 11 hits in the nightcap, and four different players had multiple-hit games. Kristina Brakke (Jr., Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) was 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in a pair of runs. Bang went 2-for-3 with a triple to leadoff the game. She was 4-for-7 on the day and pushed her batting average to .37. Jill Flatau (Sr., Perham, Minn./Perham HS) had two hits in the second game and now leads the Cobbers with a .390 average. Jolene Rebertus (So., Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) was the final member of the mutiple-hit club. She went 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
Concordia will play at St. Mary's on Sunday, April 27 at 2:00pm. The
Cobbers will wrap up their season on Monday, April 28 when they host league-leading
Gustavus at 4:00pm.
