Series Recap
(MOORHEAD)-- Concordia nearly stuck a huge pin in Gustavus' MIAC title
balloon, but in the end the Gusties prevailed to sweep the doubleheader
12-0 and 2-1.
Gustavus entered the series 15-1 in league play and a half game ahead of second place St. Thomas. The Cobbers, playing in their final twinbill of the year, weren't able to contain the high-powered Gustavus offense in the first game. The Gusties blew the game wide open in the fourth inning when they scored eight runs on Cobber starting pitcher Gretta Stritesky (Ogilvie, Minn./Ogilvie HS). Entering the inning, Gustavus was holding on to a 4-0 advantage. Concordia was unable to score in the fourth or fifth inning and the game was called due to the league's eight-run rule. Gustavus (17-1-0 MIAC, 22-9) collected 15 hits in the game, seven of which were for extra-bases.
The Gusties pounded out five doubles and two home runs. First-year player Audrey Lenoch went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run and three RBI's. The Cobbers managed only four hits in the five-inning affair. Leadoff hitter Jamie Bang (Fr., Hermantown, Minn/Hermantown HS) went 2-for-3.
The second game appeared to be headed in the same direction as the first, as Gustavus scored a run in the first, had a pair of hits and had runners at the corners before starter Steph Boesche (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) found her groove and got Sara Medved to ground out to short. Boesche then stymied the Gusties over the next four innings, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters.
The game pivoted around the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. The Cobbers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Bang singled in Steph Gemar (Jr., Felton, Minn./Shanley HS) with two outs. Gustavus proceeded to score the eventual game-winning run in the top half of the sixth inning but the game's dramatics were saved for the bottom of the frame. Concordia loaded the bases with one out, and that's when the Gustie defense turned golden. Shyla Wilson (Sr., Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) hit a smash down the third base line and Melissa Aust snared the ball and fired to home to get the force out. With two outs, and the game hanging in the balance, Gemar hammered a ball to deep right field. Gustavus right fielder Julie Langenfeld got a good jump on the ball and made a spectacular catch to rob Gemar of a hit and the Cobbers of the go-ahead runs.
After Boesche worked out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning, Concordia could only mount a solo walk by Bang in the bottom of the frame. Gemar was the only Cobber with multiple hits in the finale. She finished the game 2-for-3 and the memory of what might have been. Boesche pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs and and seven hits.
Jill Flatau (Sr., Perham, Minn./Perham HS) went 2-for-5 in the series and finished the season with a team-leading .382 average. Bang, who was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader, finished closely behind at .380.
Concordia finishes the year 7-15 in the MIAC and 11-24 overall.
