Cobbers Finish Fourth at Annual Cobber Invitational.
Kirk Nelson
Hettinger, Minn.
duels with Bemidji State's Steve Leuer in the 1000 meters. Both runners broke the Olson Forum Record in the race.

(Moorhead, Minn.)--- Kirk Nelson (Sr., Hettinger, N.Dak.) broke another record and Bobby Clark (Jr., Seeley Lake, Mont.) set a personal-best on his way to finishing second in the long jump, as Concordia placed fourth at the Cobber Invitational. Concordia's team total of 108.5 was only 15.5 points out of third place and 36.5 points behind runner-up Bemidji State.

For the second straight week Nelson was involved in the most exciting race of the meet. A week ago, he finished second in the mile by 2/100th of a second on his way to setting a school record. This time it was a head-to-head duel in the 1,000 meters - and once again Nelson finished second. Nelson and Steve Leuer of Bemidji State ran shoulder-to-shoulder for the entire race before Leuer was able to hold off Nelson at the finish. Both runners broke the Olson Forum record of 2:32.58 set back in 1995. Leuer finished with a time of 2:30.85 and Nelson was only 32/100th of a second behind (2:31.17). The mark places Nelson second on the school's all-time list of 1000 meter times. The school record is 2:31.05 set by Greg Defor in 1988.

Clark gave Concordia an unexpected lift in the long jump by finishing second. He jumped 19-9 3/4 in the qualifying round, and then busted out a leap of 20-6 1/4 in the finals. The mark is an indoor personal-best for Clark and is also the longest jump by a Cobber athlete in two years.

Other "top three" finishers for Concordia included: Ben Nylander (Jr., Lisbon, N.Dak.), who ran third to Leuer and Nelson in the 1000 with a time of 2:36.38; Nick Myran (So., West Concord, Minn.) in the 3000 meters at 8:57.81 and the 4x400 meter relay team of Jordan Talge (So., Moorhead, Minn.), Nick Steffens (Sr. Aitkin, Minn.), Greg Moss (Fr., Lakewood, Colo.) and Jeremy Pris (Sr., Somers, Mont.) who finished second with a time of 3:31.23.

Concordia will compete at the Bison Classic on the campus of North Dakota State on Saturday, February 22 at 5:00pm.
