Cobbers Pull Away From St. Olaf, Win 5-2.
![]() |
Concordia swarms the net as Miranda Koenig #23 (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) looks to score. Koenig scored her 1st collegiate goal in Concordia's 5-2 win over St. Olaf. |
It took Concordia a full 20 minutes to find their game legs, but after leading 1-0 after at the start of the second period, the Cobbers scored four more goals and pulled away from St. Olaf (0-1-0, 1-3-0) to win 5-2. The victory is the third straight for the Cobbers to start the 2002-03 season.
Concordia (1-0-0, 3-0-0) jumped on the board less than five minutes into the game when Lindsay Czarnecki (So., Riverside, Calif.) took a pass from Bridgette Richter (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) and scored her second goal of the season. Concordia outshot the Oles 8-1 in the opening frame but were unable to get anything else past St. Olaf goaltender Kerry Rollwagon.
In the second period, Concordia received a pair of goals from players at the opposite end of their careers. At 5:52, first-year player Miranda Koenig (Moorhead, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal. The eventual game-winner was scored by Concordia's all-time leading scorer, Katie Jacques (Sr., Tempe, Ariz.). Jacques used a nifty stickhandling move in front of the Ole goal to slide the puck past Rollwagen.
St. Olaf was able to pull within two at 3-1 when Brit Schultheis scored her first goal of the season late in the period.
The Cobbers pushed the lead back to three when Jacques scored a shorthanded goal six minutes into the final period. Jacques stole the puck at her own blueline and proceeded to edge past the St. Olaf defense before sliding the puck past a sprawling Rollwagen. It was Jacques' sixth goal of the season and 70th of her college career.
The Oles would cut the lead back to two when they scored on the same power play. With just over six minutes left to go in the game, Kate Anderson (Sr., New Ulm, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season to finish off the scoring.
Concordia goaltender Shyla Wilson (Sr., Cohasset, Minn.) stopped 11 of the 13 shots she faced to pick up her second win of the season. Rollwagen had the busier game, facing 28 shots and turning back 23.
The two teams will finish off the series tomorrow at 2:00pm at the Moorhead Sports Center.

The Headline:
The Weather Outside is Frightful, But Opening the MIAC Season is So
Delightful!
The Teams:
Concordia (0-0-0 in the MIAC, 2-0-0 Overall)
Cobber Notes:
Concordia has jumped off to a 2-0 start in the 2002-03 season. The
Cobbers swept UW-Superior last weekend in the thriving metropolis of Superior,
Wisconsin. Besides spending their weekend touring all the sites of the
city, Concordia used both afternoons to tour the offensive zone of the
Yellowjackets. Concordia finished the two-game series with 81 shots on
goal and nine that found the back of the net. The Cobbers were led by senior
Katie Jacques who finished the series with four goals and an assist. For
her efforts, she was named the MIAC Player of the Week. The Cobbers used
two different goalies in the series. On Saturday, Concordia used all-conference
netminder Shyla Wilson to hold Superior to three goals. Wilson only gave
up one even-strength goal as the Yellowjackets scored one on the power
play and another with an extra skater on the ice. On Sunday, head coach
Kerry Norman gave the nod to sophomore Jamie Savage. Savage responded by
stopping 44 out of 48 shots she faced in picking up her second collegiate
victory. She also had a game-saving poke check in overtime that stopped
a huge opportunity for the Yellowjackets. First-year forward Bridgette
Richter scored the game-winner with only 56 seconds left in the overtime
period. Richter is another in a long line of Cobber women's hockey players
who are from the sunshine states. Richter hails from Long Beach, California
and came to the Cobbers after transferring from Northeastern College in
Boston after last season...Concordia now has eight players on their roster
that are from the hockey hotbeds of California/Arizona/Texas.
St. Olaf (0-0-0 in the MIAC, 1-2-0 Overall)
Oles' Notes:
St. Olaf enters this weekend's series one game on the down side of
.500. The Oles opened the season by splitting with UW-Eau Claire
before dropping a non-conference game to Hamline last weekend. St. Olaf
won the opener of the series against the Blugolds. Goaltender Andrea Smith
was the key ingredient for the Oles in the win, as she stopped all 33 shots
that Eau Claire fired on net. The game was decided in the third period
as St. Olaf finally got on the board mid way through the frame. Lorna Wilson
scored the game-winner, and Smith made the tally stand up despite a late-game
barrage put up by the Blugolds...Lindsay Weir currently leads the Oles
in scoring with one goal and three assists. She is one of seven first-year
players on the roster for St. Olaf. Head coach Tom Oseicki has a bright
future laid out for the Oles as he currently has 18 sophomores or first-year
players on the roster...Oseicki brings a rich hockey tradition to the bench
of St. Olaf. For years he was the head boys' coach at perennial powerhouse
Burnsville High School. He led Burnsville to two state championships in
the mid-90's, and also collected six section championships in his 33 years
as head coach.
The History: Concordia leads the series 4-0.
Last year the Cobbers swept the series 4-0 and 4-1 in Northfield. Shyla
Wilson stopped 20 shots in picking up the shutout in
