Game Story:
(St. Peter, Minn.)-- Concordia conceded an early, first quarter safety but then rattled off 24 unanswered points to beat Gustavus 24-2 in the MIAC opener for both teams in St. Peter, Minn. The Cobbers received two touchdowns from fullback replacement Ed Oehlers and a third score from Shawn Reile to post the 22-point win. Sophomore kicker Brian Halverson knocked home his first field goal of the season in the second quarter to round out the Cobber scoring. Concordia's defense held the Gustavus offense to only 32 rushing yards and 203 yards of total offense. The Cobbers gained 119 yards on the ground and threw for 151 yards to finish the game with 270 total offensive yards. Josh Dietz was the top Cobber as he was credited for nine solo tackles and assisted on four others. He also had one sack and made two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Bobby Clark led the Cobbers' ground game, picking up 92 yards on 18 carries. Oehlers finished the game with 13 yards on 7 hard-nosed carries. Senior quarterback Ryan Hebrink was 9-for-20 for 112 yards and 1 touchdown through the air and also ran for 44 yards. Junior wide receiver Andrew Passanante continues to improve as a wide out. He finished the game with 111 receiving yards on 7 receptions. It is the second straight game that Passanante has gained over 100 yards and caught 7 passes. Gustavus was led by wide receiver Tim Nesvig who hauled in 11 passes for 84 yards. On the ground, the Gusties' Drew Stifter carried the bulk of the load. He ran the ball 18 times and gained 62 yards. With the win, Concordia improves to 2-0 overall this season and has now won four straight games dating back to November 2, 2002. The Cobbers will host Bethel next week in a pivotal MIAC early-season game. The game is scheduled for a 1:00pm start and is part of the annual Family Weekend at Concordia. Gustavus falls to 0-2 on the year and will play at Carleton next Saturday. |
