Cobbers Pull Off Biggest Win in School History.
Jamie Savage (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn) concentrates on making one of her six saves in Concordia's streak-breaking win over Macalester.

(Moorhead, Minn.)-- Morgan Bain (Fr., Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) scored a goal in the seventh minute and Jamie Savage (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount HS) - and the entire Concordia defense - were able to make the score hold up en route to a record-setting, streak-breaking 1-0 win.

The 2003 Concordia women's soccer team continues to break streaks and find success in the MIAC. Two weeks ago the Cobbers beat Gustavus for the first time in 15 years, and against Macalester on Wednesday, Concordia (4-1-0 MIAC, 7-2-0) beat the Scots for the first time in 16 years. Macalester (2-1-1 MIAC, 6-1-1) also entered the game on a 23-game MIAC winning streak and had not been scored on in conference play since October 17, 2001. All those streaks came to a shattering end after the Cobbers were able to hold off the Macalester attack for a full 90 minutes. The loss was Macalester's first of the season.

Bain scored the game's only goal when she collected the ball after the Scots goaltender Lisa Bauer fumbled the ball at the top of the box. Bain calmly slotted the ball into the unoccupied goal to break Macalester's shutout string. The Scots rallied to put pressure on Concordia's goal for the remainder of the half but were unable to beat Savage. She finished the half with four saves.

The second half was more of an end-to-end affair as both teams had chances to score. Macalester came close to scoring in the final 45 minutes but was denied by Savage, the Cobber defense or misaligned shooting.

Concordia had quality counter chances late in the game. Lisa Gutsche (Jr., White bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake, HS), coming off the bench in the second half, nearly broke free of the Scots defense but was unable to settle the ball. Piper DeLaPointe (Fr., Fargo, N.D./North HS) struck a dead ball in the dying seconds of the game that caromed off the crossbar and was almost put in by a pair of Cobber attackers.

Savage finished the game with six saves, while Bauer pushed aside four Cobber shots. Macalester outshot Concordia 17-10.

In the end, the Cobbers were able to hold on for the victory and keep pace with defending MIAC champion St. Thomas, who beat Augsburg 3-1. Both the Tommies and Cobbers are tied atop the league with eight points.

The Cobbers will host St. Mary's on Saturday, October 4 at noon as part of the annual Homecoming festivities.
