The Cobbers have reason to celebrate as they clinch a spot in the four-team MIAC playoffs with their 5-0 win over Hamline. |
(St. Paul, Minn.)-- Concordia jumped on Hamline early and cruised to a 5-0 win in St. Paul. With the win, Concordia clinches a spot in the inaugural four-team MIAC playoffs which begin next week. The victory pushes Concordia's record to 7-2-1 in the MIAC and 11-5-1 overall.
The seven conference wins pushes the school record for league wins even higher. Coming into the season, the most wins by a Cobber women's soccer team in the MIAC in the history of the program was five (1993). The 11 total wins is one shy of the school record for wins in a season. That mark is held by the 1999 squad which finished the year at 12-6. Concordia also clinches the school record for highest finish in the MIAC in a season. The previous record was set in 1993 when the team finished in fifth place.
Morgan Bain (Fr., Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) started the game with a bang by scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the year at the 1:06 mark. The score would prove to be the game-winner, her team-leading fifth in that category. Miriam Lombardozzi (Fr., Billings, Mont./Billings HS) scored 10:30 later to make the score 2-0 and give the Cobbers control of the game. Suzy Grabko (Fr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo North HS) completed the trio of first half goals by notching her fifth goal of the year. It was her team-leading 20th point of the season.
Concordia added two more goals in the final half. Bain added her second goal of the game and ninth of the season at 53:18, and then Kari Krugler (So., Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) scored her first collegiate goal at 79:52.
Jamie Savage (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount HS) played all 90 minutes in goal for Concordia, picking up her fifth shutout of the year. It was the team's tenth shutout of the year which sets the school record even higher.
Concordia outshot Hamline 26-6 and held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Cobbers will finish the regular season
by hosting St. Ben's on Saturday, November 1 at 1:00pm. The two teams have
a good chance of meeting in the opening round of the league playoffs next
week. The Blazers could finish first or second and Concordia will more
than likely mirror their finish by ending the season in third or fourth
place.
