Game 33: vs. Bethel - May 7, 1:00pm at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex
Inch-By-Inch Cobbers Gain
Ground On Playoffs With Series Split Against Bethel.
In the end, it wasn't the sweep they were looking for, but it moves the Cobbers one step closer to the MIAC playoffs with only one series remaining. Concordia is now 11-7 in the conference and 16-18 overall. Bethel finishes their season by holding steady at .500. The Royals end with a 10-10 league mark and an 18-18 overall record. The Cobbers will have to wait until Monday to find out whether they will earn a spot in the MIAC playoffs for the third straight season and fourth in the past six years. Concordia will play Augsburg on Monday, May 9 at Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. at noon. If the Cobbers sweep the Auggies, they will automatically earn a spot in the postseason. If Concordia splits, or is swept by Augsburg, they will have to rely on the outcome of the St. John's/Gustavus doubleheader on Monday in St. Peter to know if they will continue to play on. In both games against bethel, the Cobbers stumbled out of the gate and allowed the Royals to post a crooked number in the opening inning. In the first game, Bethel tagged Concordia starting pitcher Kevin Engebretson for a pair of runs in the first frame. Engebretson then settled into a rhythm, and held the Royals to only two more runs in the next three innings. The Cobbers started the series opener with a pair of base runners in the first inning, but could not scratch across a run. That quickly changed in the second inning when Concordia scored three times off of Bethel starter Ryan Mahoney. The Cobbers used four singles to score the trio of runs. The biggest blow came from the bat of Billy DeNet. DeNet laced a two-out pitch up the middle that scored a pair of runs. Bethel rallied to regain the lead in the top of the third inning. They used the same strategy as the Cobbers, scoring all their runs on one-base hits. Concordia tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Chris Klabo scored on a Nick Esala sacrifice fly. Josh Dietz entered the game in the top of the sixth inning, relieving Engebretson who battled for five tough innings. Dietz proceeded to work out of jams in both the sixth and seventh innings. The top of the seventh inning gave the fans one of the premiere pitching/hitting match-ups of the year. With a runner on third, Dietz faced league-leading hitter Kirby Carr with only one out. Carr, who leads the MIAC in batting average, slugging percentage, hits, RBIs and home runs, was unable to catch up to a pair of Dietz fastballs to start the at-bat. He then worked the count to 2-2 before looking at a called third strike. Dietz then got Josh Storm to hit a slow ground ball to second to end the inning. Dietz continues to get stronger and stronger as the season progresses. In his last four outings, he has pitched 8.2 innings, has not given up a run, only allowed two hits and has struck out nine. In the decisive bottom of the seventh, Brian Schumacher started the frame with a single to left and then advanced to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice from Esala. Bethel coach Greg Indelcoffer decided to intentionally walk Ryan Emter to set up the force play. Unfortunately, catcher Travis Wermedal was unable to snag a pitch from reliever John Sugihara in the next at-bat and both runners moved up a base. Indelcoffer then issued a free pass to Aaron Eckhoff to set up a bases loaded situation. Concordia skipper Bucky Burgau then pulled off a clutch personnel move by pinch-hitting Scott Johnson. Johnson won the game on the very first pitch of the at-bat when he lined a ball into right field that scored Schumacher. In the second game, Cobber starter Tieg Herman, like game one starter Engebretson, was unable to get out of the opening inning without giving up multiple runs. The Royals tagged Herman for three runs to start the game and take control of the contest from the onset. Unlike the opener, Concordia was unable to counter with their own big inning and Bethel coasted until the third frame. That is when the game was put out of reach and the Cobbers were thrown back into a must-win situation on Monday. The Royals sprang for eight runs in the third, as they knocked out eight runs on eight hits and sent 13 men to the plate. The toughest part for Concordia was that five of the eight runs came when there were two outs in the inning. The best part of the final three innings for Concordia was the relief work of Zach Johnson. Johnson entered the game in the fifth inning after the previous two Cobber pitchers had surrendered 11 runs and 11 hits, and held the Royals to a single base knock in the final three innings of play. The Cobber offense was able to get three runs off of Bethel's starter, and game winner, John Buteyn. However, staked with an 11-run cushion, Buteyn sailed through five innings of work to pick up his seventh win of the year. For the series, DeNet continued his torrid pace at the plate. The junior shortstop went 3-for-7 and drove in four of the Cobbers' nine runs. Brian Knoblauch came off the bench in the second game and was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored. Firstbaseman Scott Halupczok had his best day at the plate this season. He hammered the ball all over the park and finished by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Concordia will travel to
St. Cloud on Monday for their playoff-style series with Augsburg. The doubleheader
will be played at Faber Field at noon (click
