UST Notes
by Gene McGivern, UST SID
The St. Thomas baseball team , ranked 14th nationally, won four close home games last Monday and Tuesday to extend its winning streak to 15 -- three off the school record of 18 consecutive wins set in 1997... The Toms, 19-3 overall and 4-0 in the MIAC, are 12-2 in games decided by two or less runs... The Toms played error-free baseball Monday and won a pair of one-run decisions vs. Wisconsin-Stout. The Toms escaped 5-4 and 1-0 (nine innings). They came back Tuesday to top No. 23-ranked St. Olaf 2-0 and 4-3...
In moving atop the MIAC standings at 4-0, UST pitchers have fanned 28
and walked only two while allowing just seven runs in four games... The
Toms face another MIAC title contender Sunday with a 1 p.m. double-header
at Concordia-Moorhead. They also host Gustavus next Wednesday (2:30 p.m.
doubleheader), play next Thursday at Concordia-St. Paul (3:30 p.m. nine-inning
game) and play two April 24 at Carleton (1 p.m.)... UST has won 31 of its
last 32 MIAC road games... Chris Olean (SR-Mpls./ Washburn) threw a four-hit
shutout with no walks and nine strikeouts to beat St. Olaf. Olean is now
4-0 on the season (13-1 in MIAC career decisions) with an 0.55 ERA and
48 strikeouts and only one walk in 33 innings... Ryan Hartung (SR-Apple
Valley/Rosemount) had two doubles and scored both UST runs. Matt
Faulken (SR-St. Paul/ Central) had an RBI single in the first then left
the game with a pulled muscle... In game two, Rich Swenson (SR-Maple Grove/Osseo)
-- who missed five games with a pulled muscle -- hit a solo homer in the
fifth inning to tie the score 2-2, then knocked in the game-winning run
with a double in the sixth inning... Jake Mauer (SO-St. Paul/Cretin-Derham
Hall) also had a key RBI hit in the fifth inning... Ryan Nelson (SO-Fargo,
N.D./South) fanned four in 2 2-3 innings of relief to get the win
and climb to 5-1 on the year. Mike Honsa (JR-Mendota Heights/Cretin-Derham
Hall) worked 4 1-3 innings and allowed six hits and two runs... In the
wins over Stout, UST led game one 4-0 early before Stout came back to forge
a 4-4 tie. In the bottom of the sixth, after a two-out error gave
the Toms runners at first and second, Nate Sundberg (SO-Red Wing) delivered
what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single. Nelson pitched 2 2-3
innings in relief of starter Mike Wilfahrt (SR-West St. Paul/Henry Sibley)
to get the victory... In game two, UST lefthander Bryan Edstrom (FR-Maple
Grove/Totino-Grace) threw a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts for seven
innings before being relieved. Tom Kelly (JR-St. Paul/Hill-Murray) came
on to pitch two scoreless innings and get the victory. UST scored the game's
only run in the bottom of the ninth. Paul Rafferty (JR-St. Paul/Cretin-Derham
Hall) and Sundberg singled, Dan Novak (JR-West St. Paul/Henry Sibley) was
walked intentionally to load the bases with none out. After a short fly
out, Faulken had a pinch-hit single scored the winning run... The Toms
also scored a 16-2 win in a nine-inning non-conference game with Concordia-St.
Paul April 8. The 15-hit attack was keyed by five home runs. Sundberg had
a homer and three singles; Brad Bonine (FR-Rosemount) homered and doubled
in his first two collegiate at-bats; Steve Aronson (JR-Minnetonka), Faulken
and Rafferty also hit home runs... In four MIAC games, Hartung is batting
.538 (7-for-13) with six doubles and a homer and seven runs scored; Ray
Noble (SR-Mpls./Washburn) is hitting .583
(7-for-12); and Faulken is batting .556 (5for-9).
