BIEBEL, CARDINALS ALL SMILES AFTER SWEEPING ST. OLAF, ST. JOHN'S AND
HAMLINE
IN one WEEK
WINONA, Minn. - You'll have to forgive Saint Mary's University men's basketball coach Bob Biebel if he seems to be in an extra-good mood these days.
Not even the walk across campus in sub-zero temperatures could wipe the smile off his face.
A three-game winning streak will do that to a coach.
"Everyone is playing very well right now," admitted Biebel, who enjoyed
the first perfect 3-0 week in his two years as the Cardinals' head coach.
"The biggest key for us right now is that we are getting a great effort
from everyone defensively. We're playing great defense, and that's helped
carry
us through - even when we've struggled offensively."
There haven't been too many struggles for the Cardinals of late. SMU opened the week with a 68-57 win over St. Olaf, then added an impressive 65-57 upset of St. John's and capped off the trifecta with a 56-41 blowout of Hamline.
The three straight wins - the first time SMU has put together a three-game winning streak since the 1986-87 season - gives the Cardinals six wins in their first 11 games. They haven't won seven games in a single season since the 1993-94 season.
But Biebel isn't about to worry about such trivial matters - as long as the Cardinals keep playing the way they are playing, the wins will continue to pile up.
"I think last year, we focused too much on the number of wins we had," explained Biebel. "This year, we're just telling the guys to go out there and play the game and see what happens. We're not worried about how many games we've won, or what kind of a winning streak we're on. We just need to keep focusing on playing good defense and putting the ball in the hoop - those are the things we can control."
And over the last week, those are two areas the Cardinals have been in complete control of.
"Everything is clicking right now," admitted Biebel. "Last week was important for us, not just because we won three straight, but also because we found ourselves in some situations we aren't accustomed to, and I thought we responded very well."
For example, in last Wednesday's win over St. John's, the Cardinals were in the unfamiliar position of trying to protect a slim lead down the stretch. No problem.
Against Hamline, the situation was completely reversed. The Cardinals bolted to a 25-point second-half advantage and needed to make sure to stay focused, despite such a commanding advantage. Mission accomplished.
"Obviously, we you are winning, the game of basketball is much more fun," Biebel said. "But with each win comes a little added pressure. We've raised the level of expectation - now we have to keep working to raise it even higher."
€ THIS AND THAT: Ryan Rankin (Green Bay, Wis.) led the Cardinals in scoring in all three games last week, averaging 19.0 ppg. . . . Sam Pociask (Appleton, Wis.) (11.0 ppg) and Jason Boll (Sauk Prairie, Wis.) (10.0 ppg) also averaged in double figures last week. . . . Rankin's 17-point, 11-rebound performance against Hamline marked the junior's first double-double of the season.
