NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The
St. Olaf men's basketball team defeated St.
Mary's 67-59 in overtime Feb. 3 but fell to second-place Gustavus 69-55
on Feb. 6 and to St. Thomas 67-60 on Feb. 1. The defeats dropped the
Oles to seventh place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (7-8 MIAC; 10-9 overall).
Free throws were the key
for Gustavus, as the Oles converted 6 of 7,
compared with 17 of 21 for the Gusties. The Oles hit 22 two-point field
goals while the Gusties made 24; St. Olaf hit five three-pointers and
Gustavus hit four.
Justin Herzog (senior, Maple
Grove, Minn.) led the Oles with 21 points,
followed by Chuck Schroeder with 17.
The St. Mary's game was
tied at 53-53 after regulation play at Skoglund
Center, but the Oles set their net afire in overtime with 14 points,
compared with only six for St. Mary's. Neither team scorched the cords
during regulation, however; St. Mary's converted 35.4 percent of its
two-pointers and only 16 percent of its treys, while St. Olaf was 43.4
percent from the two-point zone and 40 percent from three-point range.
Ole center Matt Jensen (senior,
Waseca, Minn.) led St. Olaf scorers
with 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Herzog
had
10 points and six rebounds for the Oles.
Against St. Thomas the Oles
pulled to within two points in the last
minute, after trailing by as much as 10. But the Tommies' Kip Sparby
converted six free throws in the last 50 seconds to keep his team in
front.
Andrew Marshall (junior,
Woodbury, Minn.) led the Oles with 12 points.
Herzog and Andrew Covert (FY, Faribault, Minn.) added 11.
Jensen, the career scoring
leader for the Oles, moved closer to the
1,000-point mark; his total now stands at 964.
