St. Thomas notes
By UST SID Gene McGivern
UST Softball   15-12 overall, 6-2 MIAC

St. Thomas lost a key MIAC softball doubleheader at home Sunday to league-leader St. Mary's 3-2 and 3-0. A two-run homer in the top of the sixth erased a 2-1 UST lead in the opener, then the Toms got only one hit in game two loss. The Toms came back Monday to score a 5-0 win at Gustavus and complete a weekend sweep. The Toms beat Gustavus Saturday 7-1 and now are 15-12 with seven doubleheaders to play. Sophomore Casey Curson pitched both victories over the Gusties -- she pitched a two-hit shutout Monday with seven strikeouts and one walk, and allowed two hits and an unearned run with no walks and eight strikeouts Saturday. Near the halfway point of the 22-game MIAC season, St. Mary's (10-0) is the favorite to win its third consecutive conference title with Concordia (8-2), St. Thomas (6-2) and St. Ben's (4-2) also clinging to title hopes. St. Thomas is gunning for its third consecutive NCAA playoff berth and top-three MIAC finish. The Toms play doubleheaders at Concordia Wednesday (4 p.m.), at Macalester Saturday (1 p.m.), and at home vs. St. Ben's next Tuesday. In Monday's victory, Sarah Grudnowski was 2-for-4 and scored twice; Avery Heidenreich and Heather Martin each had two hits and one RBI. In the last four games, Martin had six hits in 15 at bats (.400). In all 27 games, Grudnowski leads in batting (.44) and hits (32). Martin is hitting .337 with 13 RBI and 28 hits. Senior Jessica Boumeester has a team-best 24 runs, is hitting .268 (.342 on career) and is the UST career leader in stolen bases with 82 (25-of-26 this season). In pitching, Curson  is 8-6 with three saves
and a 1.74 ERA; senior Kelly Weyandt is 5-6 with a 1.23 ERA. The Toms played the toughest non-conference schedule in school history. They beat 1998 NCAA champion UW-Stevens Point (1-0) and regionally ranked LaVerne (9-0) and split with regionally-ranked Claremont and Buena Vista. They have nine losses against nationally- or regionally ranked ranked Chapman, Central, UC-San Diego, Pacific Lutheran, St. Mary's, UW-Eau Claire and Division I San Diego.
