Freshman guard Missy Pederson sank her third 3-pointer of the second half with 1:08 to play to help host St. Thomas (9-0, 7-0) hold off Concordia (6-4, 5-2) 75-71 in MIAC womens basketball action at Schoenecker Arena.
Junior Molly Hayden had 18 points and seven rebounds to help the Tomswin their 18th consecutive MIAC game and give Ted Riverso a victory in his 400th game as UST womens coach. Riverso is now 324-76 (.811) in his 15th and final season.
The game was tied 42-42 at
halftime, but UST used a 10-0 run to lead 66-53 with 7:55 to go.
Cobber soph Sarah Spears
scored 10 consecutive points to cap a 12-2 run that pulled Concordia within
70-67 with 1:28 to play. But Pederson sank a clutch shot from the
top of the key to extend the lead to 73-67 with 1:08 to go. UST added two
free throws in the final 24 seconds and held off the Cobber bid.
Spears had 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half and added six assists and six rebounds. Jamie Olson added 11 rebounds. The Cobbers outrebounded UST 40-34 but were hurt by 26 turnovers.
Erin Hempel made 12-of-15
at the line and closed with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals. Paige
Olson scored 14 and Pederson tallied 12 points. Sue Schonhoff added six
steals.

Womens Basketball (8-0 overall, 6-0 MIAC)
UST 72, St. Olaf 47; UST 98, Augsburg 47; UST 77, Carleton 56
St. Thomas won three games this week to take sole possession of the
MIAC lead. UST beat St. Olaf by 25 at home, won by 41 Monday at Augsburg
and won by 21 Wednesday at Carleton... UST will take records of 8-0 overall
and 6-0 MIAC into four games in the coming week -- Saturdays 1 p.m. home
game vs. Concordia-Moorhead; Mondays 7:30 game at Bethel; Wednesdays 7:30
game at Gustavus; and the Jan. 16 home showdown vs. unbeaten St. Bens...
In the Carleton win, UST led 47-31 at half, helped force 30 turnovers and
coasted to its 16th straight win in the series. Paige Olson (SR-Maple Grove/
Osseo) had 16 points; Missy Pederson (FR-Plymouth/ Robb. Armstrong) scored
15, Molly Hayden (JR-Eden Prairie/ Hopkins) had 12 points and Erin Hempel
(JR-Brooklyn Park/ Champlin Park) had 10 points, six rebounds and four
steals... The Toms beat Augsburg for the 27th time in a row, using a 50-7
run to close the first half. Hayden scored 20; Olson had 14, Hempel scored
13; Anne Newell SO-Woodbury) added nine points and nine rebounds; and Amy
Ginsburg (SO-Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) added five assists and three
steals... In beating St. Olaf for the 24th time in a row, UST had five
score in double figures. Mary Thomes (JR-Little Falls) scored 13 off the
bench; Olson scored 13; Hayden and Hempel each had 12 points and seven
rebounds; and Pederson added 11 points and four steals; and Tara Miller
(SR-Little Falls) had four assists... UST has won 39 consecutive MIAC road
games and 29 overall road games; is 86-0 since Dec. 1994 when foes score
less than 60 points; and is 83-1 overall vs. MIAC foes since Jan. 1995,
with 72 of those 83 wins by 12 or more points.. Saturdays game vs. Concordia-Moorhead
will be the 400th game as a head coach for Ted Riverso, who comes in with
a 23-76 (.810) record.
