SMU'S STREAK-SNAPPING WIN OVER HAMLINE
NOT COMPLETELY SATISFYING FOR FIERKE
WINONA, Minn. - On the outside, Saint Mary's University women's basketball coach Kim Fierke may have appeared to be very happy following last Saturday's 52-50 victory over Hamline - a win that snapped the Cardinals' two-game losing streak.
On the inside, however, Fierke wasn't in much of a mood for celebrating.
Don't get the third-year head coach wrong, she was extremely pleased in the final outcome - it was the way the Cardinals got to that end result that has Fierke's insides tied up in knots.
"We did not play very well," admitted Fierke. "It wasn't very pretty, but a win is a win, and right now a win is exactly what this team needed."
Despite back-to-back road losses to St. Olaf and St. Benedict, Fierke figured Saturday's game was a game they should win - after all, Hamline entered the game with just one win in their first eight games.
A two-point victory, however, wasn't exactly what she was hoping for.
"It was very important that we got that win, but we didn't play up to our capabilities, and that's what frustrating," Fierke said. "All season we've had a tendancy to play to the level of the opposition." And Fierke knows that her team can't afford a second straight lackluster performance on Monday night at St. Catherine - not with MIAC power Concordia on the horizon Wednesday.
"We're tired right now, no question about that," admitted Fierke, whose team played three games last week and will play three games again this week. "But we have to be able to overcome that. We need to go out (Monday) and put together a good, solid performance. "We need to build some confidence heading into Wednesday's game against Concordia."
€ THIS AND THAT: Freshman Amy Burns (Winona, Minn.) scored a career-high
13 points, while averaging a team-high 10.1 ppg in the Cardinals' three
games last week. . . . Kelly Gleason (Prior Lake, Minn.) also averaged
10.1 ppg last week, while Jenny Long (Westmont, Ill.) was the team's rebounding
leader (6.7 rpg). . . . Sara Schachtner (Somerset, Wis.) scored a season-high
13 points vs. St. Olaf. . . . The Cardinals are in the midst of their second
straight three-games-in-six-days stretch, playing at St. Catherine Monday,
then at home against Concordia on Wednesday and Gustavus on Saturday.
