BASKETBALL: The Blazer basketball team (14-1 overall, 11-1 MIAC tied for first place), ranked in third place in the NCAA West Region, picked up a pair of conference wins last week. CSB defeated Macalester 88-40 on Wednesday, Jan. 20, and then downed Carleton 71-58 on Saturday, Jan. 23. In the Macalester game, junior Laura Wendorff, Fulda, dropped in 16 points to lead four Blazers in double-figure scoring. Then against the Carls, Wendorff had 21 points and nine rebounds.
Wendorff is tied for fifth place on the all-time CSB scoring list with 1,149 points. Senior Robyn Ruschmeier, Plato, is in eighth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,055 career points, and is only the second Saint Ben's athlete to score 1,000 points in basketball and register 1,000 kills in volleyball.
CSB will travel to St. Olaf this Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. The Blazers will then host Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m.
The Blazers are ranked in third place in the nation in the Columbus Multimedia poll this week and in 12th place in the USA Today/WBCA poll. CSB was ranked number one in the nation by a pair of pre-season polls: WDIII News and Columbus Multimedia.
A year ago, CSB (25-2 overall, 21-1 MIAC tied for first place with St. Thomas) earned their 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and their fourth conference crown. The Blazers return all five starters this season.
