9/11| Concordian Sports Story

9/5 Cobbers lose at Moorhead State 41-26 as Dragons rush for 530 yards. Dragon QB Tony Duerr had 5 TDs and 242 yards rushing.  Concordia QB Ethan Pole completed 16 of 30 passes for 193 yards and one interception on the day. The Cobbers ran for 120 yards.

Cobber Pregame notes

The 15th annual Crystal Bowl between Concordia and Moorhead State Sept. 5th will open the 1998 Cobber season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:35. The Crystal Bowl game is sponsored by Crystal Sugar. 

Concordia  leads the series with the Dragons 44-19-12 and won last year's game 17-7

- Concordia won its 400th game in school history last year with the regular-season finale win over Carleton. The Cobbers lost to Augsburg in the first round of  last year's NCAA Playoffs to cap an 8-3 season, 7-2 and tied for second in the MIAC

- Cobber starting QB Ethan Pole completed 10 of 18 passes against the Dragons last year for 96 yards, 1 TD and no interceptions. 

- The Cobber defense held MSU's outstanding runningback Grover Moore to just 35 yards in last year's game and the Dragons completed just 4 of 18 passes

- Cobber injury notes: 
 Returning starting fullback Len Crouse
 has been nursing a back injury so Chad
 Sauvegeau is listed as the starting fullback, 
 though Crouse may still play this week. 
  At left tackle Corey Hyde has been in 
 the mix to start but he is battling knee problems. 
  At middle linebacker, Travis Boyd has 
 been expected to play but he too is 
 questionable with a knee injury. 

- Multisport Cobbers 
 Among the Cobbers on the 2-deep depth chart are several multisport athletes. 

Making the Grade 
  • Starting center Bob Zacher enters the 1998 season as Concordia's top returning offensive lineman. He has started at center for the Cobbers since midway through his sophomore season. He helped Concordia lead the league in rushing yardage in 1997. Bob has a 3.75 GPA as a Math and Physics double major. 
  • Other returning Cobbers who earned Academic All-MIAC honors last year include 

  • Scott Holthusen , Nels Paulson, and Aric Rhen
New offensive line 

Four first time starters, all underclassmen,  will join  seniorenter Bob Zacher (6-3, 250) in the Cobbers' interior offensive line: 
76 Chris Kvarnlov, Jr. LT, 6-4, 290 
65 Craig Smaagaard, Jr. LG, 6-2, 250 
74 Scott Jorgensen, So.RG, 6-3, 265 
75 Jake Estenson, Jr. RT, 6-5, 265
