Arrival of Coach Fenwick Watkins in 1922
The Scout contained an article introducing Coach Watkins, who was Concordia's first African-American faculty member::
Coach F. H. Watkins through his capability of instilling fight into his men and turning out winning teams is well known in the athletic realm of the Northwest. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1909, and is backed by a distinguished career as a varsity man in three major sports -- football, basketball and baseball. During his junior and senior years he was captain of the football team. In basketball he was a forward of the varsity five and was captain in 1908. He held down the 1st base position in baseball.
This is Watkins' first year at Concordia College. He comes to us with much coaching experience, having been coach of the Fargo College Athletics for a period of ten years. From 1921 to 1922 he was coach at the North Dakota Agricultural College, Fargo, North Dakota.
His coming to Concordia has already given athletics a big boost. His
iron determination has won for him the respect and admiration of all.(5)
