Women's soccer
Women's soccer initiated at Concordia
Women's soccer is a new addition to the Concordia athletic roster this year. And, like many teams in their "expansion" year, the soccer squad gained more in experience than wins.
"Given the growing popularity of soccer in the upper Midwest," said Concordia athletic director Armin Pipho, "we decided late last summer to start a women's soccer program in place of field hockey. We had little time to prepare for the season and even less time to recruit players."
The interest shown in soccer was remarkable for a first-year sport,
according to Pipho. Thirty-seven women turned out for the first meeting
and 18 stayed to complete the eight game schedule. The team ended with
a 0-8 win-loss record. Mike Anderson ('80) served as the women's soccer
coach this season and is expected jo return next year. Anderson is a biology/science
teacher at Glyndon-Felton High School and has been involved in the Fargo-Moorhead
Soccer Association.
