Women's tennis competes in state tourney
The 1980-81 spring women's tennis team, coached by Dr. Bernice Pavek, finished the season with a 12-0 record in dual matches and was invited to comPete in the state tournament for the first time.
At state, they won five first round matches before being defeated by seeded players. Tammy Thielman of Jamestown, N.D., won consolation honors at number three singles, while Jill Waalen of Hudson, Wis., lost her consolation match in three sets.
Prior to the state tournament, the women were selected to play in the Minnesota AIAW Tournament at Carleton College, Northfield, Minn. Eight teams are chosen in Division III by a selection committee of coaches and the tournament director. Concordia swept the tournament, which included University of North Dakota, Moorhead State University, North Dakota State University, Valley City State College, University of Minnesota-Morris, North Dakota State School of Science, College of St. Thomas and Ramline University.
The Cobber women were also successful at the College of St. Benedict's Invitational. Waalen and Thielman won the second place trophy in doubles. Naomi Paulsen of Northfield, Minn., defeated Ann Schmidt of Moorhead in the singles consolation finals and Kathy Kinnear of Greenwood, Ind., made it to the singles semifinals.
Final individual match records for the spring season were as follows:
Ann Schmidt, 12-5; Naomi Paulsen, 143; Tammy Thielman, 13-1; Jill Waalen,
11-3; Kathy Kinnear, 14-3; and Ann Sackreiter of St. Paul, Minn., 8-4.
In doubles, Schmidt and Paulsen were 10-2 and Waalen and Thielman were
11-5. Also playing on the team were Jill Doering, Marshall, Minn.; Linda
Dahl, Coon Rapids, Minn.; Laurie Klitzke, Litchfield, Minn.; Julie Stenson,
