The long and winding road of the regular season has ended for the Running Cobbers men's basketball team. Concordia closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 93-90 come-from-behind win over Bethel.
At one point Saturday night, the Cobbers looked to be down and out, but junior Daimen Crump answered the bell to lead Concordia to the win. At halftime, the Cobs were down 18 by a score of 54-36. However, Crump's 20 second half points and 39 overall brought Concordia to the promised land. Crump hit two free throws with :27 remaining to give the Cobbers their first lead since early in the game at 91-90.
Senior Jason Sorenson scored 19 points, and, in the process, set a new school record with 89 three-pointers in a season. He shattered the old mark of 88 set by Bryan Flam in 1988.
Senior Kenny Nelson had 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Junior Greg Dean also dished out the ball for seven assists.
The Cobbers ended the season with a conference record of 16-4. Their 19 overall wins is the second best total in Concordia's history.
The MIAC playoffs began last night when Carleton came to town. Their record entering the game with an overall record of 17-7, 15-5 in the conference.
The winner of that game will play the winner of the game between St. Thomas and Gustavus on Saturday.
If Concordia and Gustavus won, the two teams will meet Saturday at Gustavus. If the Cobbers and Tommies won, Concordia will host the game.
